  1. I have noticed this. We are British with a fairly RP/classic BBC accent but with the odd twinge of westcountry in it, I correct the local influence in my own speech and my kids haven't really picked it up.

I have had a few problems using American Phonics programs. Words like Orange sound like Arange to me when I listen to them and my daughter gets confused. I have also notice a lot of words where the vowels are marked as long and we pronounce them short and vice versa. It can be really confusing and take a minute to figure out.

  2. A close friend of mine has triplets. They are boys and 7 at the moment. She also has an older daughter who is 8. Life is pretty busy I think. The boys flexi school, they are in the local primary school 2 days a week and home ed the rest of the week.

They use WTM in a flexible way, picking and choosing the elements that suit them but in a relaxed manner. I think she finds that their days are pretty full. I do know that she tries to take full advantage of free activities run by local museums, libraries, country parks, national trust etc so they get to do external activites for a lot less money. I think having triplets comes with its own challenges, they are a force of nature.

  3. Hi, I just spotted this. We are in the UK. In Devon. There are a little enclave of us down here who use various elements of the classical method. Our local group is really mixed in its approaches to home ed so no one feels left out.

I have noticed much more of a presence of unschoolers on uk forums, I think maybe they shout louder. We are sort of child led and eclectic, picking from various things, though that happens to mostly be classical as it suits us.

I suppose I have noticed more requests for information on structured approached on forums recently. Maybe it was on the THENuk forum and HEUK.

  4. For my dd it was around her 6th birthday but she doesn't go far. Her friend in the street lives 2 doors down and they walk to there and back on their own. We live in a cul de sac surrounded by fields and any traffic is pretty slow and will be our neighbours parking up or leaving their drives so there is no trough traffic, they all know that kids play in the road. The girls ride their bikes up and down the road occasionally which is very short but they don't leave the road on their own.

  5. I taught my dd basic BSL from a very young age, maybe 4 months. She never signed back to me but was a very early talker and learnt the words we were trying to teach her to sign instead. I think that she gained a huge amount from her exposure to signing even though she never used it, it seemed to open the floodgates of communication.

I am trying to find a BSL course now to do some more.

  6. We tent camp and have done a fair bit since our daughter was born. Our son first went camping when he was about 4 months old. I would say I have fallen out of love with it at the moment so we are not going this year and I may look at getting a trailer tent or a camper van in the future to make it more convenient. Think I have fallen out of love with it because i am getting less patient as I age and all the setting up is annoying me plus I notice the cold and sometimes uncomfortable nights more.

  7. I can understand the urge to own a house.

Would it be possible to use some of your yard space to add something like a single room log cabin/garden house, properly insulated and with simple heating and electricity so you could use it as a school room/play room all year round.. Or maybe add a conservatory to the main house- I know they go up fast as my neighbour has a huge one that went up very fast and friends have one they use as a school room and dining room.

  8. I googled wolf spider and wish I hadn't. I was going to say I was thankful that we didn't have that kind of spider in the UK only to find we do. AAAArgh.

We have false widow spiders in our greenhouse, They used to be in the house until we changed the windows and now they can't get back in when the weather cools. I got bitten about 7 yrs ago, It really hurt and took a long time to heal , I was pregnant at the time and wondered if my dd would have super spider powers.

  9. A friend of mine has a horrible problem with nits. 3 out of 4 of her kids are in school part time and their class mates seem to have permanent nits. She says its like the other parents have given up bothering to treat them. She just keeps her kids in constant treatment mode to keep on top of it and it works as they have managed not to pass it on, but hard work for her. Some parents are so relaxed about it, its infuriating.

She found the nitty gritty comb works best.

  10. My dd has been attacked twice by our neighbours cat, luckily it was a claws only attack both times so was quick to heal. The same cat attacked our elderly neighbour last year and bit her leg, it took her a long time to recover. This cat has a brain tumour that makes him very vicious, the entire neighbourhood gives him a wide berth now and you can hear cries up and down the road of people letting each other know the cat is about.

I did get attacked by my childhood pet cat once, We had a dog for a short while, one day it bit the cat and the cat bit me in a kind of ricochet effect. Bit deeply into my hand, it bled heavily and it did get a bit infected. For some reason my parents didn't take me to get any medical help but luckily it healed ok and stopped bleeding. I have several scars on my hand like a cat dental imprint.

    I do love cats though.

  11. I think it would be fine to just tell her that in your house every one showers every day and she needs to do that too. She has probably got used to that grimey feeling of unwashed bodies in summer and un brushed teeth in the morning and views it as normal. A few days of showering and teeth brushing twice a day might sort that out. Its nice to feel clean.

  12. I have received reiki and received attunements and completed reiki level 1. One of my best friends is a reiki practitioner & teacher. I don't think its a miracle cure for anything but I think it can helpful to get your body in a great place to heal. I have received it along side EFT. It is deeply relaxing even if you don't believe it will cure you its a great opportunity for time out. I use reiki on my my family, plants and animals. I definitely feel something when giving and receiving reiki

I think there are different approaches to Reiki and my friend always receives a lot of flak from other practitioners for her take on it.

I don't think its something that is understood yet at all but I think there is something there. For me and for my friend its not religious as such though more about a universal all pervading energy that we can tap into and it sort of helps to get your energies flowing properly and as a result helps healing. She is much more eloquent than me in explaining it but thats how I understand it.

  13. I am in the south west uk.

Its about 21C here (about 70F). Its a lovely temperature. We have had a very cold and long winter with a ton more snow than normal. Spring was late but arrived with a bang. The last 3 years have been wet and cold, it feels like this is our first proper summer in years. Its been a lot hotter over the last few weeks with odd days of torrential rain.

Winter will come as a shock. I don't really cope with cold weather well.
