  1. We have bottom sheets and a duvet with washable cotton duvet cover. We all sleep like this. We may have other layers on top when its very cold, say a quilt and a blanket on top but generally we just vary the duvet in the cover from a very light 3 tog one up to a 15 tog. The feather duvets and covers are so soft and light, even the thicker winter ones.

I slept under sheets and blankets as a child and always hated it. I hate being restricted it makes me cringe just thinking about it.

I don't think we own any flat sheets. Its rare we get super hot nights here, maybe 1 or 2 nights a year max but none last year..

  2. Ikea is really great, we have a lot of their stuff. Some of the super cheap stuff may only last a few years but the next notch up in quality is really good. I have a massive solid birch bookcase that has been moved all over the house and its great such good quality.

They are great for basics that its hard to find elsewhere too and I like their lamps.

We are thinking of getting their fitted wardrobes this year.

  3. I wore my daughter until she was about 41/2. She got uncomfortably tall rather than too heavy. I wore my son regularly until around the time he turned 2. He doesn't really like being in a sling. He would rather be off running and it has always been a fight to get him in them but I do still use a sling with him once or twice a month.

I wore my daughter on my back and my ds on my front for a while when he was little.

  4. This pasta recipe is gorgeous and you could directly substitute the sausages for your ground pork (I've tried it before and it works).

It would be really appropriate for boxing day, its got really nice warming flavours. My only tip is to half the amount of fennel and chilli as its quite strong and overwhelming at the levels stated in the recipe. The basic recipe feeds about 3 adults. It also only takes 1/2 an hour.

  5. For accomodation in the UK try the youth hostel Association. Also worth looking at offers in Travelodge or Premier inn, they have lots of cheap room offers. Premier Inn tends to be slightly nicer rooms.

I live in Devon and its definitely worth a trip down to the westcountry at that time of year, its beautiful. Dorset could also be great place to visit, particularly the Charmouth area.

Travel wise you could try National Express coaches, Its massively cheaper than trains. They do also go into Europe not just around the UK.

Lots of Pubs do 2 meals for £5, or there abouts. The Wetherspoons chain do nice generous meals that would feed a family cheaply.

  6. Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to try removing dairy straight away and see if it makes a difference.

She doesn't in general crave anything that I have noticed.

I'll look into allergy testing, I've not heard great things about NHS allergy testing either (am in UK) it either takes ages or you just don't get taken seriously enough to get referred. My friends son has a peanut allergy and years later is still waiting for testing.

  7. My best friends dd bites my son all the time. We've been trying to figure out why she she does it and come to the conclusion that she feels like its her only way to get back at him as she is really tiny.

She is a few days older than my son, they are 3 in february, but a lot lighter and weaker than him and biting is her go-to for handling her anger or getting her point across, or just self defense.

She draws blood regularly. I do wish she would stop as my son has seizures when he gets hurt (Reflex anoxic seizures) and has had a few as a result of bites.

I don't really think there is any miracle cure other than growing out of it. being told off by her parents hasn't made any difference but she does seem to be doing it less as she gets older.

  8. Lisa - Thanks. I think I'll try food elimination.

I do know that she doesn't tolerate Aloe vera on her skin-she gets a bad rash like she has been scalded or sun burnt if she comes into contact with it so I will investigate what aloe vera is related to. She is definitely arrogant and thinks she knows everything.

I just reserved a book about food intolerance at the Library so hopefully that will arrive soon and may be helpful.

  9. It could be the lanolin. But it could be impurities in the lanolin rather than just the Lanolin. As in it can get other chemicals mixed into it. He may not have the same problem with organic wool.

I used to sell cloth diapers and some babies had issues with some brands of wool covers and not others and it was usually the organic ones that were ok.

  10. Hi

I am trying to figure out if a food intolerance can account for some symptoms my daughter has.

She has really dreadful skin on her hands, really dry and it breaks down and bleeds really easily, this is all year not just winter and rarely goes away, her skin is like sand paper. Sometimes it happens on her face but that is rare. She is also constantly clearing her throat and makes a lttle hum kind of noise a couple of times a minute. She has black rings under her eyes pretty much all the time and someone pointed out to me that her eye lids were quite puffy (though I hadn't noticed that myself).

Her behaviour is quite irritable too, very highly strung and quick to over react. Its starting to affect her friendships as other kids don't want to put up with her moods when there are other more fun chilled out kids to play with.

Up until recently she has really bad problems with constipation , from about the age of 2 I would say and as a baby was always a pretty dreadful feeder (both bf and formula) with bad colic.

I am only just now wondering if all her little quirks fit together to form a bigger picture.

We took her to the doctor for the constant throat clearing and the hum about 2 years ago and it was dismissed as a habit that she would grow out of.

Her diet is pretty good, minimal processed food. She takes Cod liver oil on and off, Her skin does improve when taking it but it never completely goes away.

Any ideas or advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

  11. Spatone is fabulous but it is expensive. I take a lot of spatone but usually manage to get it on 3 for 2 offers in a local chemist. Its definitely worth it if you can afford it. Spatone seems to have become what all the local pharmacists and midwives recommend at the moment. Used to be Floradix but now seems to be Spatone.

I found Floradix not strong enough to get the iron I need at the moment it worked out really expensive (plus not sure if it would be possible to overdose of the other vitamins it contains).

  12. We celebrate at the end of December. From about the 21st. We call it Christmas out of convenience but I think for me it has always had far more to do with our natural desires to see our family, eat together, have fun together, exchange gifts, at the darkest part of the year and its convenient that all of our family has long holidays then. I do have pagan leanings, I always have done and I come from a family where my parents rebelled against their own strict religious upbringing.

I haven't made any effort to tell my children the Christian nativity story. I plan to tell my daughter about it at some point soon as she has some Christian friends at the moment and would gain from knowing more about their religion.

We do celebrate the winter solstice in a gentle way. Until recently we celebrated with another family but they have now moved. I suppose our house is in celebration mode from the 21st to the new year. Lots of family meals and time together.

We don't do big commercial Celebrations though. We go through phases of no presents, or only cheap presents (under £5), we currently give only practical gifts largely because none of us are into owning stuff for the sake of owning it. We also tend to move away from traditional Christmas dinners, I will cook one sometimes but we often just have a big meal of favourite foods.

  13. I organise a home education group that is not really aimed at academic activities but we do lots of enrichment actvities. Lots of arts, crafts gentle science experiments, trips and most of all lots of fun and chance to make friends and support each other. We have all different religions and approaches to education and no one is excluded. It works really well and people tend to form friendships which may then lead to them doing something academic together. In general we all want our kids to be able to get the education they need to go and and do what they want to do and for most people it is to university level. We may just be very luckly that we can have such an easy going group.

  14. We are definitely waldorf influenced. Particularly in the area of play things, but I've also used a lot of other waldorf resources on and off. I suppose it comes and goes with us. I would never completely go over to Waldorf methods but of all the influences out there its one thats always there.

  15. my ferritin was 5 about 2 months ago ish. I was feeling dreadful, really really tired with lots of other symptoms, I have found spa tone has worked best. I was taking 6 sachets a day. Now reduced it to 4.

Trying to get another appointment with my doctor to get the results of my most recent tests and guidance on what I should be taking but finding it impossible to get an appointment at the moment. the surgery merged with another one and suddenly there are not enough doctors to go round. Looking for a new doctor.

    I definitely recommend spa tone.
