  1. Diane Stanley does great biographies. Joan of Arc, Shakespeare, Cleopatra, & Queen Elizabeth are some of them.

:iagree: Plus, Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, and Peter the Great (to name a few more :) )... They're really good picture book biographies (mid-elementary range text)!

  2. We are just finishing up 1st with my oldest, and my 2nd will start Kindy next fall.

I listened to the advice about slow and relaxed and focus on reading primarily, and I think we saw good results with that mindset. And, I'll echo what I heard. Enjoying reading well is the best goal to work towards for littles. (Oh, and following instructions, but that seems more like a parenting challenge than a teacher/student thing for us :tongue_smilie: )

In math, however, I didn't really like any of the k-5 materials I had a chance to preview, and I thought going really slowly through 1st grade stuff would be fine. My biggest do-differently for my second is to NOT start (however slowly) with anything that she does not seem developmentally ready for. It's terribly frustrating to both of us.

My daughters learn much more efficiently (and own it) if it's developmentally appropriate. Deciding what content and when to start is going to look different for each kid. But, starting at the wrong spot too soon (even slowly) was a bad idea for us.

  3. I've seen several threads resurrecting my interest in Biblioplan, again. (I know, I know, these things come in waves... :) ) Looking more carefully at their materials has me wondering if something like the Companion would be helpful for self-education, even if we use something more like SOTW for the kids. Akin to the "meat being in the teacher's notes" vibe I get when people discuss using TOG for youngers.

I am especially interested in meshing some church history with SOTW2. I have SCM's Middle Ages guide, and might do some of the Famous Men books instead, but will probably end up with a little bit of everything thrown in (my own personal recipe for procrastination :glare: ).

Does anyone do this? Use just the Companion and do something separate for the littles? Thoughts? :bigear:

    Thanks!

  4. Does anyone who has the digital version (in PDF) think it would be simple to convert it to a Kindle file? Or are there lots of funny fonts/clip art/etc that would require it to stay PDF in order to read it well?

I'm considering buying the digi version through Home School Buyer Co-op, but I hate reading only at the desk. If something like calibre would convert it even mostly readably, I think I might take the plunge.

    Any recommendations?

    TIA

  5. OP – Thanks for the heads up! I’m sorry that you and your DD were blindsided with (legitimately) unexpected sensitive content. :grouphug: I hate it when that happens, and it was very considerate of you to post about it.

Also, kudos to you for not getting annoyed with this thread, LOL! :001_smile: Sometimes it is so funny to me that someone can post something just as a heads up FYI, and all of a sudden they are stuck defending themselves! Just for the record, I do *not* think that the fact that you gave us a heads up means:

    1) that you don’t appreciate the classical emphasis on integrating topics from “different subjectsâ€,

    2) that you can’t redeem an unexpected topic into a fruitful discussion,

    3) that you don’t appreciate responsible reproductive and end-of-life care for your pets,

    4) that you don’t care about shelter animals, or

    5) that you shelter your child inappropriately.

On the other hand, I DO Think that the fact that you gave us a heads up means:

    1) that you know your children well, and like to exercise wisdom and care in how and when you expose them to certain themes (like practically ALL homeschoolers I know!),

    2) that you would have appreciated a heads up yourself, and

    3) that you are considerate person, giving to others what you yourself wish you had gotten.

So for that, I simply say, Thanks!

    :iagree:

  6. I just tried to bring it up and got the "this page cannot be found" error message.

I wonder if their site is down?

I think you can still purchase their materials, (exodusbooks.com, rainbow resources, etc.) but that's rather odd.

Sorry to not be more help.
