  1. Thanks so much, KathyJo, for answering so many questions about your program. I recently got RLtL1, and LLtL1&2 (pdf at Lulu). I actually got them for my second dd who I think would really benefit from the phonogram OG spelling route. (She cooperates with Phonics Pathways some days. But, she really wants to know all the ground rules before she attempts Anything. So, I think a switch/start over would be good for her. However, I could never "get" WRTR well enough to implement helpfully.)

After looking through them for a while, however. I wondered if they would work for something more, too. My oldest is a great reader and pretty decent speller, but I would like to back up and solidify phonograms/rules much more coherently for her. We did AAS1-3, and tried HTTS, but they both seem a bit scattershot. She can tell the rule and apply it for the lesson. But, mostly she just "knows" how to spell some words and doesn't others (usually struggling with the more complex, less frequently read ones).

So....all that blathering is to say, I want to back up enough with her to be able to use prepared dictation to cement rules. But, I think we should start with RLtL in order to really "get" the OG method (Both student and teacher). She's been skating through RLtL1 as I'm trying to pick up the markings/rules in order to utilize them for the words she would actually benefit from analyzing. Do you think getting RL2 or 3 would teach any more of the system (i.e. markings, specific rules?) If I'm using it as a spelling program for a very fluent reader, would 2 or 3 do a better job of explaining the markings/bringing up rules? Or should we just go fast through 1 and figure out the spelling journal (which I also got through Lulu...it looks great for what I want to do longer term. Thanks!)

Fwiw, I'm planning to switch my oldest over to LLtL (probably 3, maybe 4 if it's out) next year after we finish RS3 which is going relatively well this year.

Is this question even making sense? :)

  2. I'm asking specifically about 1A because there are really only three chapters in it. (At least, in my version...purchased four years ago, I think...) Chapter one is addition, chapter two is subtraction, and chapter three is the connection between addition and subtraction facts. So, I while I would definitely recommend their getting the Light Blue bundle if they like it--I'm wondering if the Blue Series Addition 1 and Subtraction 1 are essentially Light Blue 1A. Does anyone have both? Is there that much more in Light Blue 1A?

    Hopefully that makes more sense.

Sorry to be all rambly-confusing. It's worse in real life! :)

  3. I currently own Light Blue 1A/B for myself. I'm looking to get my SIL started this year and give her enough of a head start in a K/1st mashup for her to feel confident about her options and choosing in the next few years. (Lots of backstory, but this is the short version.) For a variety of reasons, I would like to give her enough to go on for the rest of this school year. So, I've been looking at the Blue Series vs. Light Blue, and for 1A I wonder if the Blue Series Addition 1 and Subtraction 1 (on Currclick 3.95 + 5.00) would be basically the same material as Light Blue 1A (on sale at Kagi, $13.50).  Then I could potentially get Light Blue 1B from Kagi and have 1st grade in it's entirety. This would give them the time to test drive and see if they like it well enough to get the bundle price when it's available in the spring (March maybe? or April? I don't remember which month).

    Any thoughts? TIA

  4. I've seen this book recommended several times recently, so I requested it from our library. It arrived, and I'm wondering what parts of her book you found helpful carried over into the homeschool environment. It seem like a lot of the first part (i.e. as far as I've read so far) is more classroom management rather than actual writing instruction.

I couldn't find previous discussions in my (admittedly cursory) use of the search function. If anyone knows of a good thread where people already said all this stuff, I'd love a link.

    Thanks!

  5. Depending on the ages of your kids, I think either "Jot it Down" or "Partnership Writing" would be the most helpful to understand the direction she's advocating (and age appropriate steps to head that way). Partnership Writing in particular helps me make sense of The Writer's Jungle.

I got them at the discounted homeschoolbuyerscoop price, which allowed me to jump in. But, I can totally see the price tag being prohibitive.

Hopefully, Farrar will jump in this conversation at some point. Her descriptions also contributed to my ability to make sense of the program. I know the search function is not always helpful, but you might search for her board name and Bravewriter.

    HTH

  6. I found this forum while searching for a comparison/review of two curriculum providers while beginning the research before homeschooling. (I think my oldest was 2-ish at the time.) The boards introduced me to TWTM which I have read once (maybe twice) all the way through, and in parts when I want to find something particularly.

We meld a bit of classical and CM with a little bit of made-up-on-my-own methods.

  7. My defenses are failing. I keep thinking, "Well, W&R is only scheduled for 3-4 days a week.  That still leaves time for poetry teas, Friday freewrites, etc."   Must be strong!

I initially bought WWE3 (even though we started late last year and are only 2/3 of the way through WWE2). Then, I finally read most of my copy of TWJ this summer and bought Partnership Writing. I thought that using mostly PW with a bit of WWE copywork/dictation would be a good mesh. Then, I read this thread. I have now sold WWE3 in order to pre-order the Fable books and somehow mesh them with PW. I think it can be done! (At least, I imagine it could be...by someone... maybe...)

    sigh.

  8. Thanks so much for the Amazon links! That option makes it so much less tempting to buy both sets NOW to get the 20% off (especially having just figured out the shipping costs from CAP directly).  I heart Prime shipping.

Thanks, too, for the info about how long the discount will be available.

This place is so helpful. At least, you help me spend more money than I meant to. But, it's on such cool books!

  9. We did SOTW2 this year and the time period piqued my interest. Thanks to recommendations here, I looked for and scored some good ebay deals on TTC Daileader audios, so I've been cycling through those during kitchen-working times for the last few months. They're really interesting to me. My oldest even has enough background info to enjoy them a bit, too (when she wanders in and out as I make supper).

I like hearing what everyone else is up to, too. :)
