  1. I really like a lot of the things I've found recommended in the VP catalog. I noticed, though, that they seem to have two cycles through history (roughly 5 years each time ?) instead of the SOTW/TOG three cycles (4 years each); and they start the first cycle in 2nd or 3rd grade instead of first.

This obviously doesn't work as well with grammar/logic/rhetoric stage model of WTM. But, it allows instead for more skills based concentration in K-2nd, and starts building knowledge content on that a little later.

I think I understand what the differences are in the programs. I would like to know how that works in real life.

We used CHOW as a read aloud for history this year in K-5. I know she doesn't remember much of the content without prompts, but it seemed like a good idea to use some of our massive amounts of read-aloud time for non-fiction. It has been extremely relaxed. (See if we could together explain what we read about to her dad at supper.) No pressure; brief exposure to real people/places/times. I'm pleased with this year (for the most part :001_smile:).

The choices I waffle on for next year are primarily

SOTW/AG for grammar stage (1-4), then BP or TOG for logic/rhetoric

    or

SOTW at a faster pace (read aloud 1&2 in a year, then 3&4 in a year?) more like we did with CHOW this year, just for added exposure, then start something more like the VP rotations a little later and take it slower.

Has anyone done intentionally chosen one track over the other? Or switched from one to the other? And why?

Sorry for such a complicated question. I hope it made sense. :tongue_smilie:

    TIA!

  2. I love many things on here, but I have to say I have started to love librivox and mp3s.

I have downloaded tons and tons of things, and my kids love listening to them. I've downloaded what's on Ambleside's reading list and my kids are now telling me stories from Fifty Famous Stories Retold, which I never thought they would even listen to. They're absorbed in various folk and fairy tales, and they are listening to some longer books when I am busy doing something else. I am shocked at how fantastic this has been. And it's FREE! I've also downloaded some stories from Kiddie Records and Story Nory that are also nice.

I love Google Books and Project Gutenberg and other sources for old, online books.

Great link! Thank you for posting this!

  3. We've been using a 1951 ed. of CHOW as our history read-aloud for K-5. Every so often, I come across a phrase that seems really obnoxious to me, but I usually just substitute. If I read it out loud before I realize it, I explain why it is considered inappropriate now, and we go on. I can see how his style might be really annoying. For kindergarten for us, it's working really well. I just got access to SOTW, and I think we will progress to that when we do school more formally.

  4. I already have a copy of FLL1. Would it be helpful to go through that and pick out some basic terms/definitions and make sure she knows those and leave formal grammar instruction alone for a few years?

For K5, I'm most interested in helping her learn how to read and enjoy that skill as much as she enjoys being read to. That's our focus at present.

  5. I found the forum while searching google for side-by-side comparisons on curricula after having sent away for twenty trillion catalogs. I stayed because it is so much cheaper to feed my addiction vicariously.

I'd like to add my thanks for those of you who have been here and done this already. Your experiences and opinions fascinate me.

I also waste a lot of time lurking. :)

  6. Okay, just reading this thread is getting me excited to start when our oldest is in 1st grade. We can't swing it this coming year (K), but I bought a used copy of the Y1 U1 already to make sure it worked how I dreamed it would; hearing everyone else enthusiastic for the same reasons I am just makes me happy! :)

    So, thanks!
