  1. I read the Bombay Prince and am ¾ through the Mistress of Bhatia House, both by Sujata Massey. They are books 3 and 4 in the series, which doesn't require being read in order, but it's nice that way. These books are nice mysteries set in the 1920's Bombay with all the politics and complexities of multiple religions along with British colonialism. I really struggle with the religious, political, and sexist oppression. So much oppression! I usually have to take a few months off between books. I have come to realize that if I were to suddenly find myself in that society I would likely spontaneously burst into a pyre of flames of outrage. 🔥

One adult apologized last year when he saw my child thriving in a new environment and his child removed from a group due to the same behaviors we had deep concerns about.

Wow, I think I remember you posting about this and I am amazed that you got an apology. I also totally get still being angry with them as you still see the affects of their behavior play out

OP, totally normal feelings! Intellectually you know they have made up but emotionally you aren't there yet. It will happen to the extent needed, you don't have to rush it.

Is there a way to change the terminology for rating card difficulty? I would love to use this with my 5th grader & have put together a number of decks, but he’s really turned off by having to select “FAIL” for cards he doesn’t know. 😬

Huh. I don't remember that in the ratings. I wouldn't have liked that either! I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for you.

An electric car is safer, more practical (kids, pets, groceries) and more environmentally friendly (in general, motorcycle emissions are dirtier than car emissions, unless the motorcycle is electric). Oh, also much less maintenance and repair. It’s always interesting to me that on this forum, not many people seem to consider EVs, yet they are super common in many parts of the country.

We have a new plug-in hybrid and I've already been reminded (by a stranger) about how producing the battery is "so bad for the environment it practically wiped out the environmental benefit" Do you have a response for this kind of comment? Is the comment strictly true? My response is that we should start harvesting asteroids, but that is more of a long term strategy, if it ever becomes possible at all

    The Serendipity Project!

One of my knitting friends gave me two balls of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool fingering. What I hadn't realized was that the blue would become purple and the green would go to yellow.  Other colors to follow. So glove #2 will have the same pattern but a different coloration. Curious to see where this goes...

That project looks so beautiful. And warm! What a funny surprise about the colors. I think you might be able to get 5 mix and match mitts out of those (although if the second sock is hard, I can imagine the *5th* mitt could take a couple of years 😄)

  6. Oh, if at all possible, I would recommend making yourself a reservation now so that you actually and truly will not be home that evening. Even if it is just at a local Hampton Inn. It seems like that would make it easier to stick to your boundaries, you wouldn't be there if someone tried to show up anyway, and mentally it might be nice to be away for that night.

should I open discussion with a question about which of, say, two days works best for people?

This sounds good to me. I would be sure to openly acknowledge that this is a change from previous years. Perhaps someone more skilled at written language and persuasion than I am can help with wordsmithing.

Oh, also, you are not required to respond to every question. So feel free to focus your party of the discussion on what you want to accomplish.

Sounds like even in the best case scenario this could be tricky. Best of luck!

The other half is just annoyed because they act like they couldn't care less about their education half of the time.

I was just tweaking my youngest today about that. She texted me that she didn't want to take the math test or the bio quiz. I told her I was sure they would understand. She should just say, "I am a student! I am part of the only group of consumers that want LESS for our money and time. I demand less!" She sent me an eye-roll.

    Persevere, @SKL!

  9. I probably drink 5 or 6. Generally they are all without sweetener or creamer or any kind, which makes it easier on my conscience to indulge. The first 2 or 3 are half-caff coffee, the rest are usually black tea. Although this week will see a few hot apple ciders. When I was homeschooling my dc would sometimes laugh at me for just drinking plain hot water from the microwave. Hey! It keeps my hands and my belly warm! 😀

  10. It can take up a lot of time to study a language well. That might be a reason to limit official study to two. If course she can do whatever she likes in her own. Since they are both romance languages, French and Spanish likely have a fair amount of overlap (I've never studied French). She may want to strategize, perhaps shift the more-phonetic Spanish to self-study, stick with French and add a non-romance language if she has one of interest.

A pricey option your family might want to look at is Concordia Language Camps. Over the years I've had a couple kids do their month long immersion programs. It really helps with comfort speaking the target language.

There are also a number of exchange programs out there. Some are a bit sketchy, so do investigate the options deeply. My dd just submitted an application to study in Germany next school year.

If you make half a Pb&J for your toddler by folding one slice in half, is it a taco? I think not. It’s still a sandwich.

Hm, you know, I might be more convinced by the fact that you would *never* hold that pb&j up/down like a taco, only left/right for easier biting. The 2D projection as it moves towards your mouth definitely says "sandwich", kind of like those fake fronts on businesses in the Wild West times gave off a "2 story building" vibe.

    be the fruit family

    😂😂😂

The busiest years we get about 10 visitors. This year it is close to freezing all of a sudden and there are scattered snow showers so the burden may fall on me to take care of these bags of Twix and Almond Joy. Thanks for the upthread suggestion about using the freezer.

DD just reminded me that we have a lot of freebie toothbrushes. That could be a back up if I accidentally eat all the candy and then someone shows up after all.
