@Katy not that you have to explain your opinion, but curious if you mean “all these invitations are a gift grab” is relative to 8th grad parties or any grad party, hs or 8th grade?

Not Katy, but I broadly agree with her sentiment because I've not gotten a thank you of any kind (not even verbally) for at least the last 10 graduation gifts I've sent out.  I will continue to give gifts when I receive invitations, but the general impression I'm left with is very "gift grab"

  2. On cold days, dh has a tight beanie that is slim enough to fit under his helmet without needing a fit change. It took him some searching to find something that would work. I'm those same weather conditions you would need wind proof gloves.  He also had to do some searching to find sunglasses that would work with his helmet straps.

I am no help with hair.

  3. Helmets with integrated lighting are great for increased visibility.

Be sure you have a good set of bike lights, if they aren't already part of your bike.

It doesn't really sound like either of these are necessary for a commute that is all on an uninterrupted bike path, but better to be prepared and they are so important. Plus I'm imagining that you will enjoy it so much you will soon be biking everywhere!

  4. We studied Spanish in a natural language learning fashion starting in Kindergarten. We added Latin and did a formal study of it from 4-7. In 6th we added German at an easy beginner pace. My takeaways were that 1) we used a different approach for each language, partly for ease and partly to minimize confusion, 2) starting points needed to be staggered by a few years, and 3) there is a time limit. There are just so many hours in a day if we wanted to keep up with 3 languages, we had to take time from something else. For us, once we had a few years of Latin we were ready to move on to modern world languages.

There was an old thread debating the usefulness of Latin vs modern languages. Tldr: modern languages do all the same things and have more immediate use.

This probably doesn't count, but I've been having fun taking dirty / old Barbie and fashion dolls from garage sales and restoring them for my favorite thrift shop. I just found the BEST thing for tangled, matted doll hair--synthetic wig detangling spray! The tangles come out like magic and it makes the hair smooth and shiny, with no residue at all. I also found that a human wig brush with metal pins works wonderfully--plastic brushes tend to rip out doll hair.

It's also fun to wash a bag full of musty smelling doll clothing from a garage sale and find some treasures, like homemade dresses from the 70's and 80's (real snaps! no velcro!) and Collector's Edition dresses (high quality, with beautiful fabrics).

This is my fun thing. 🙂

Mercy, it totally counts! Please don't  devalue the joy your craft is bringing you, we are interested to see you work the magic. Melissa didn't eject me from the group when I posted a picture of the electrical job I did in the garage, so surely your doll refurbishments are safe here!

ETA -  I felt like it sounded harsh, not what I intended.

  6. Maybe it is just an unusual thought for them that someone might have a second home that is in their primary home's neighborhood. When I would tell people we homeschooled sometimes people would blurt out silly things as their brains tried to come onboard with this surprising concept. I wouldn't try to police what you say, just shrug if they seem surprised. Presumably you all could theoretically still decide to sell or rent or move in or all sorts of things.

As to what I think about people who have more than one house - more housework to be done, and I think I would feel uncomfortable spending vacations elsewhere, so the idea is not for me.

I used to be like this but then the new Apple Maps has a kind of torch like icon so you can see which direction you’re facing. It made a bit difference for me.

Yes! My children are always amazed that even this does not help me! Here's the thing, i think it is because I can't orient the phone to *me*, I need to orient myself to the phone. Clearly the solution is more practice time walking in, say, European cities, but I haven't been able to pull that off yet. It will also talk me through the walk, so if I put in earbuds nobody would even know about this accommodation, but I get over confident and wind up in ridiculously wrong places.

  8. I just finished Go, Went, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck. "The novel tells the tale of Richard, a retired classics professor who lives in Berlin. His wife has died, and he lives a routine existence until one day he spies some African refugees staging a hunger strike in Alexanderplatz. Curiosity turns to compassion and an inner transformation, as he visits their shelter, interviews them, and becomes embroiled in their harrowing fates."

This is one of those adult novels that I sometimes struggle to process by myself. The main character wakes up to the the complicated realities of immigration, comparing them to his own experience of growing up in East Berlin. Although it is set in Germany, it could be moved to the US with few substantive changes.

ETA but this isn't a novel about resolution, there aren't really happy endings, just a slice of life. It reminds me of a Raymond Carver poem, that was, giving a window into life but without trying to answer any questions.

, I'd check Google Maps during the rush hour to/from to check the times (mapping the route from the various addresses to his job)

This is a good idea, and you don't have to wait until it is actually rush hour to check it. Ask Google maps to route you from the apartment to his office, then click the 3 dots by the start address. One of the options that's comes up on the list is "set depart or arrive time". You can choose and it will return estimated  trip durations.

  10. The public University in my neighborhood has held tuition constant for the last decade. Now there is a new president and I can see the first slabs falling from the facade. Last month in-progress hiring searches were drastically cut (even some with offers extended) and this month early retirement offers are suddenly being rolled out to everyone over a certain age.

On the consumer side, a lot of the decision of where to attend rests on general reputation, rah! rah! marketing, and affordability. Internal cuts don't get much notice until graduates can't find jobs.

As far as I'm aware neither of the colleges my kids currently attend are cutting faculty - but I probably wouldn't know without a fair amount of investigating. They are in different states, so I'm not too aware of what is going on.

While I think a pixel quilt is a neat idea, it might be a bit hard for a beginner. They tend to take lots of different fabrics, and it can be hard to keep track of which square of fabric goes where. When piecing the little squares, it is really easy to accidentally get left/right and top/bottom mixed up.

Sure. I guess it will depend on what OP finds difficult versus enjoyable. If she has in a past life enjoyed latch hook or embroidery, keeping track of multiple colors might not be a blip on her radar. If she is a knitter, then keeping track of a chart, and up vs down is no problem. If she enjoys quilting she is probably also friends with algebra and geometry to the extent that designing her own top might be just her thing. Any quilt could be done with a million different fabrics, or monochrome, it all depends on what floats her boat. If she decides to do a 5 color log cabin with 5" squares to cover a California King she will be making a lot of those blocks - which could be easy and encouraging or could kill her with tedium.

Maybe you know the OP better than I do <shrug>, but I'm sure she is able to flip through the options people have presented and do her own version of swipe left, not interested or boy, that one is boring but if I .... it would be really personal and fun to make.
