I ususally buy the cheaper stuff.
But are you ready for this. It does help that I am the only girl in my house now,
but I use cloth tp
I know that has helped with the cutting down of using too much paper tp at my house.
Oh and I use Homemade laundry detergent
and then vinegar for the rinse.

I agree start with the placement test. But I also like starting a bit lower. They teach some concepts, especially for word problems. They really start it in 3 B. I started there when I switched curriculums with my oldest in 6th grade, I started in 3b but we were able to go really quickly through the material.

We did the first years, DH had a current certificate. I have one but it is for TX, and I'm not ready to change it yet.
The first letter dh sent in had the wrong number codes or something, too many years now, they called and complained we ended up contacting HSLDS. They sent the school district a note, and it was nice to learn that once you send in your notice of a teaching certificate you don't have to redo it once and you are done until your certificate expires, you don't have to send it in every year.
and you don't have to test. I did not try to do it with my out of state certificate although I have heard that others have successfully done it.

Va. Beach is not the closest beach, just the most well known and touristy. If you drive down I-64 and don't cross the James River but stay on the Peninsula, you'll find Buckroe Beach - more a "locals" kind of beach but we're a fairly friendly group of people. Just not a lot of hotels, souvenirs, restaurants, or boardwalk like in Va. Beach.
"Freedom Fort" is Fort Monroe, which is an active military base until sometime in 2011. I've never been, but there's a Casemate Museum which may be interesting. Just know that it is an active military base so everyone will need ID to get on base (at least, all the adults).
This thread is making me embarrassed. So much around here I've never seen! The curse of being a local, I guess.
HTH!
I am so this way too. We drive by stuff all the time.

we are going in July. Is Va Beach the closest beach? Also, isn't there an army fort close by that slaves called Freedom Fort? is it very interesting?
Thanks~
I'm in the area too.
I do agree with just going to Billyburg and just walking go to the bakery buy some cookies and bread.
watch the parades and things happening in the streets. I think they are young enough that they would be bored with the buildings.
Ft Monroe is abou30-45 min East on 64. Last exit before the tunnel. I would say go there lots of places for them to be moving. This is the last moated Fort in use by the army and it will be closing in 2011. lots of history there too. It is on the water. You probably can get to the beach off that but I am not sure if it is open to civilians.
Also in the general area- THIS is just a 45 minute long Penninsula that you will be on from Williamsburg to Ft Monroe nothing is really far but summer traffic can be bad.
Virginia living Museum in NN. Lots of cool stuff there for kids. Across from it is the SPCA but they also have a zoo section.
Mariners museum- Probably not as good for the kids but the park around it is beautiful.
Yorktown area has beaches- off the river way but are nice but could be crowded.
Buckroe Beach is probably one of the closer beaches that would be good for a family. It has a play ground conneced to it.

I do tutoring in various areas. I google search a lot for things. Sometimes you have to get specific, Ratio worksheet FREE to find things to help.
My favorite though it Math-drills.com They have great stuff to help review things.

I have a son at Bryan and we are from VA. I will agree with some of your statements. It is a small school. They are doing some new building and working on the looks I think.
But I am posting to list some other colleges we looked at in VA. Ds was looking for a Faith based college so we didn't look at secular ones. He was also looking for a smaller college. The ones below are smaller but I don't know the numbers anymore. here is a link about private colleges in VA http://www.cicv.org/pcw.htm
Eastern Mennonite College, Close to JMU. Beautiful area. I think they require a semeseter overseas. We did not see this college during the school year so didn't get a feel for the workings. Seemed like a very nice place. Oh I was very impressed with the number of computers in various places around the campus.
Emory and Henry college- we did think that it was in a pretty area. This was an uplanned stop, but still they went out of their way to accomadate us. Again it was at a time when not many students were there-can't remember why now though. Emory and Henry is in the book Colleges that Change Lives. -
Shenandoah University this hadn't been on our list but we are Methodist, and they had started a new program and the program directors had heard from Several people THAT SAMUEL is the perfect match for this program. It was a great program-it is for Christian Leadership. Lots of neat stuff for that program, when the student graduated, not only would they have the degree but they would have this "Certificate" (can't remember the name of the program) but in essence they would end up with something better than a major and a minor and could probably easily double major. The program gave the students lots of opportuities for hands on expereiences-sort of like Student teaching. Ds really liked this program, but really had already made his mind up about Bryan.
Randolph-Macon-Ds did a retreat program for high school students there. So we didn't go with him. Not sur what he didn't like about it. I think it was too close to home for him.
Liberty- He did a summer camp there. Decided then it was too big for him. We have several friends there that love it though.
A couple of other Faith based colleges we had on a consideration list:
Pfeiffer University in NC
Montreat Univerity in NC
Covenant in TN/GA right on the border not far from Bryan. BEAUTIFUL setting

I know this is a bit old thread. My son is at Bryan now and we are 10 hours away. There are times it is really really tough and others that it is okay. 7 is more doable in one day, it literally is a 2 day trip for us. We have only visited once as a family to see him. And I went in Feb to see him.

I think it all depends on the job they can get. I also think they can pick from a list. Probably the more senior students get to pick first and then down the list.
My son isn't doing a work study but he has picked up a tutorin postion there. Some times he doesn't even have anyone to come in but he is there just incase, so he gets paid to do his homework those days. Not a bad job.
Also it can be helping in the office area. Or in admissions. Remember the students who showed you around campus those are on work study.
But there are also the cafeteria jobs and yard work.
I also do think 8 hours is too much for a college kid. Trust me there is a lot of time in a day for most college kids.
What's the best *cheap* toilet paper that you've found?

I think we are getting ignored about the cloth stuff.
I too like it.
