I remember taking lessons at the Y, and actually that coach ended up being at my church when I was a bit older, he was just a teen, and then his sister was my track coach in high school, ah digress over. anyway, What I remember most is that the day we did the test to move up and we were swimming in the deep section, and we were lined up across the edge of the pool kids on both sides, and the first kid jumped in to swim across and promptly sank straight to the bottom.
I don't remember anything else but that image.

I wished we had changed out resuce's name, I still think it makes her cringe 8 years later.
But we couldn't deciede on a name

Honestly nothing. If they are a good speller they will get it the more they read. and the older they get the more they read and understand the better they will spell.
And you can spend other time on more interesting things.

Thanks for your help, everyone. Yes, she is a proven low-tester in ps, butt hose are always on a computer, which makes a big difference for her. I think just looking at the test prep books at the beginning of the year, after having an idea of how she would do on the test that we would be using, would do the trick. I was really concerned about this (yes, she probably does have a LD, no, she can't be tested, very complicated story LOL). I feel MUCH better. Thank you. :)
Oh yuck, I would HATE HATE to take a test on the computer and then you are probably talking about a STATE standard, and I just got done with a job to help students with that. EEEK. Oh and the STRESS those kids are under. we spent WEEKS on the test stuff, how stressful.
SO WHO KNOWS how she will do on the regular test. I would say give it to her and then GO from there.
I dont' know that I would say use the test prep books in the begining of the year. Just go with your regular math programs/LA programs. Use the test prep to remind her how to find answers and to go over types of problems

I'm going to the HEAV convention and have some books to sell.
I have the Apologia 1st edition book
I hve the solutions manual
and I have the full cd program
Should I pack them all together or will they sell seperately okay too
Wait I meant sell just the cd alone or should I put it in the package too.
It is a bit redundant it is the book on cd

I was told 20%, but I'm thinking about a VERY poor tester, so.... We just need to use a nationally-normed test. Is there a test that fits this requirement that only tests math and reading? It wouldn't be so bad if that was it. I feel like I've read here about tests that cover history, too??
ETA: Turn it in if it's less than 20%, I meant.
Have you tested this child? Do you have a score that is less than that?
It would help to know the state, if not can you find out from a local group what is the suggestion.
I'm in VA. Here there is an option to turn in a portfolio or have a certified teacher say child is okay.
You can also look at the CAT test there are some different versions and one only covers Math and LA. But even then if you use one that doesn't they still put LA and Math where you can just copy that section and turn that part of the test result in.

I am like you. I have struggled with finding time to read a book.
I have one on my headboard that I read something out of every day. Some days it's a chapter somedays it is a paragraph.
And I have picked up books we have here that I have never read even as a child. I have enjoyed those. Like right now I am reading Hans Brinker. nope never read it as a child.
almost done. Haven't decided what I'll read next. I might look for more of an adult mom book. But reading even children's classics that I have never read is fun.

check out honey for a child's heart by Gladys hunt
How about the Paddington books,
Carolyn Haywood
Lois Lenski are a couple of good Authors to look for. Also go that way find some great authors and read their books.

a huge set of towels and washcloths for the kitchen from grandmil. I'm still using some of them. She gave us a lot of them and I put some away to use later.
Still reminds me of her sweet gesture.
a Clear glass pitcher- now I thought it was the stupidist gift, um until we had folks over one night and I went OH GREAT GIFT.
I also got a blanket-we didn't have one for our queen size bed and a fellow teacher asked what I really needed and that was it.
We also got some candlestick holders that as someone else said is a lovely thing

I'm sorry that is so tough.
I know that some get really stressed about what the test means. BUT in the end it is just ONE test, one component of the application process for college. There are actually colleges now that don't require the SAT.
Has he done some practice SAT test in a test like situation?

It's an assumption that you don't already have the best educational option for your child...
If they sent it to all parents it would be a different story, but if they sent it only to home schoolers, it's pretty much a slap in the face...
Right, this is my thought on it.
As I said the threat to Traditional hsing doing it with out outside help.
-
Could be that too. But still they are just targeting the people who are already hsing and not the general population.
IMHO I suspect this is strictly an email from the K12 corporation and not from a government entity. As for email addresses, K12 can possibly get them from lists as other companies do. I think these lists can possibly be from signing up for other things on the internet. I could be wrong, but K12 is a publicly traded company and has an incentive to advertise to attract new students. I actually have a ds who uses the K12 curriculum via a public cyber charter school and I do like the curriculum very much:001_smile: I cannot blame them for drumming up business:D -
How did they get your email?
Okay I see not specifically your email. But still, some type of contact somewhere down the line had to be made.
Right it wasn't mine, I'm not sure how they got the email addy.
I do know that parents have gotten letters though. If you send in an NOI in this state then they would have your address.
-
I do see it as a threat to traditional hsing.
I'm glad there are other options for educating children. But I know I have heard in my state that hsers are getting emails like this.
I opened my email this morning and saw this subject line
from Virginia Virtual Academy:
³Rachel, imagine how much further your children could go
with an education that's right for them²
Are they sending them out to all parents of school age children. If not then hsers are being speicifically targeted and I have issues with that.

I know. Usually he stays in the car, so I can't think of where she would have taken him without us knowing about it. I've called a few places, but no one has seen anything. We went birthday shopping at the mall (full of teenagers needing last minute things for prom) and she probably had it in her stroller.
Thanks so much.
WHOOPS I MEANT THE HOUSE. I wouldn't let him go with us in the car. oh wait I did say that. and long trips I mean like over 5 hours where we are spending the night somewhere else.
-
I'm so sorry,
won't help with Weasel but hopefully you will get another but this is what we did.
My trick with college boy at that age was to tell him his Oni Got car sick.
Yep he had to leave him at home except for LONG trips and then he stayed in the car.
We walked out the door once when he was a little over 2. had oni in his hand, looked at him and said ONI gets car sick, threw him down and walked out the door.
We still have Oni.
-
When my oldest was little and he whined he had to go run laps outside.
-
I'm sorry, has he applied to other places?
I am not sure about Radford but I know of other VA schools that students from PS don't get accepted into. They honestly can't take all that apply.
I too say call the admission counselor and ask what can be done to help him get into the school.

We have used Spelling Power in the past. I still have it (the old version). None of us loved it. We eventually switched to Spellwell for 3rd/4th and K12 spelling for 4th/5th. Spellwell is acceptable. I'm dropping K12 due to $. I have SP on my shelf. Has anyone found a way to make Spelling Power more fun/more vocab intensive? I love that K12 includes vocab. I looked at GWG Spelling, but it looks way below grade level for my dc's. Can I make SP work?
I only used SP for a short bit. I have one child who is a natural speller. I did use it regularly once a year to see if he was still above grade level in spelling. He was always several years ahead so I saw no reason to take time to do spelling with him.
We used Wordly wise for Vocabulary.

:iagree::iagree::iagree:
(You need the "Core" which includes history, read alouds, and readers. They are all integrated to the history.)
Right I didn't clarify that much. Yes the main core.
I meant that she wouldn't have to do the LA or Sl suggested Math or science.
-
We hsed a foster child and know of others who did the same.
it was good for the children.
-
I would also suggest the books Honey for a CHild's heart and Honey for a Teen's heart. by Gladys Hunt.
I also had Best books by Bob Jones-They did not just list Christian books but books that are good for students. They give a good description of the books.
-
I will say it depends too.
I almost bought ahead last year but talked to the co and they said they wouldn't be updateing that grade level this year so I knew I could wait.
-
I would say take a look at Sonlight's Core 3 and 4 programs. Some of the favorite cores of Sonlight. You don't have to do anything else with them but the history
Son is terrified of learning to swim. Help!

this is my suggestion. I would do some of the other suggestions too on getting him more comfortable just at the pool, but also find a private instructor to help with this.
my college boy does lessons, he has a child who was in a serious undefr water incident last year, he has her jumping off the diving board now.
