  1. I'm planning to do some of Song School Latin with my 8 and 5 year olds as part of morning time, but not have them do the workbook. I haven't figured out exactly how this will work yet, but I already have the CD from my older child and I bought the flash card set for us to play games etc.

For 9th and 6th graders, what about Visual Latin DVD's?

  2. Thanks everyone! I think I will wait and see how long it takes her to progress to the end of MM 6 and decide if she's ready to tackle AoPS at that point.

Why would you want to do this, though? We had MM 7 and AoPS pre-algebra and they are so different. If you are planning to use AoPS anyway, I can't see any reason to not just start with pre-algebra.

We already own MM 7 so that was why I was considering it. :-)

  3. We previously did WWE 1 and 2, then CAP Fable. She has been in public school this year for fourth grade. She is a strong writer and absolutely LOVES it, with hopes to be a professional writer someday.

Returning to homeschool for fifth grade, I'm not sure where to place her. I was pleased with the writing she did in school this year and felt like she gained in both skill and confidence. Options I am considering are.....

    - Continuing with CAP, maybe jump to Narrative II?

    - Another year of WWE, but not sure which level

    - BW Faltering Ownership - this sounds fun but I feel like I know the least about it

    - something else?

    TIA

  4. Upper cabinets to the ceiling.

Deep drawers instead of most lower cabinets. Definitely deep drawers next to the dishwasher for every day dishes.

I don't like the appliance garages.

Vertical divided cabinet for baking pans.

    Tall Vertical cabinet for broom/mop/etc.

I'm not sure what the corner solution is. A lot of people hate the lazy susan but it would be the awful corner cabinet we have. It's pathetic.

  5. That said, there are people who would be stay-at-home parents regardless of whether they homeschooled their kids. There are plenty of SAHMs in my family, and none of them homeschooled. So, if you're going to be a SAHM anyway, then the extra expense is pretty much just in the homeschooling materials.

I have one child in public school this year and have found that it costs us more than homeschooling. (and I am not a super frugal homeschooler either) This varies wildly of course, but there are expenses that come with public school also.

  6. I'd like to add a few music CD's to our collection but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. We have Wee Sing America, the Beethoven's Wig series, The King's Singers kids album....

A family member who is an elementary music teacher gave me a copy of some compilation from her curriculum, but we aren't loving it. Any suggestions?

  7. I'm trying to talk myself into waiting to plan until after the next edition of WTM is released. I'm thinking I'll do a crash planning session in August. But, after 22 years of homeschooling, spring weather just causes an urge to plan in me. Is anyone else wanting to see the new edition before they plan? I'll have my final four students in 3rd, 6th, 8th, and 11th next year.

Yes, I've thought that myself. An August release is hard on those of us who love planning! ;-)

  8. I'm starting to look at the logic stage portion of WTM for next year, so bear with me as this is all new.

Logic study - I'm wondering if anyone has skipped the recommended Critical Thinking Co workbooks in 5th/6th and just started a formal logic program in 7th grade? One of my big goals for planning next year is to avoid overloading our schedule, especially with busywork/workbooks. The CTC books just do not impress me based on the samples. This is for a bright kid, who already enjoys a number of hands-on logic games/puzzles. I can skip these workbooks right?

  9. I'm another one who didn't like it as much as the other levels of AAR, especially the readers.

When a friend of mine was asking about it, I suggested to just buy the teacher's guide and the activity book/cards. We didn't even use the activity book completely because my boys got tired of it - though I like that pages are easy with minimal prep on my part.

  10. Mine turned 5 in October, so he is on the older side. I started doing more this year with him than I had planned, but he insisted on keeping up with his brother. So this fall will be.....

Reading: continue AAR1, moving to AAR2

    Handwriting: continue HWT

Math: finish RS A, moving to RS B

Joining with everyone for read alouds, SOTW, misc science and Jot it Down/BW
