Yes, but he would count the dots one at a time rather than make groups of ten. He has seen the idea presented in many ways and he can do it if he is walked through it but the next time we try a multi digit problem, we end up starting all over again walking him through it. His brain just isn't ready to fully absorb and apply  the concepts which I'm not worried about, he will get it when he is ready to get it and then he will take off with it. He only just turned 6 so I'm in no hurry for him to get it.

I really just want to know if the Beast Academy 2 expects the child to know how to add and subtract multi-digit math problems. I know on the level 2 placement test, there are multi-digit problems for the child to solve but I have also heard the placement tests are harder than the content in the books so I was just wondering if anyone who has been through BA2 with a child in K or 1st could give a heads up on whether a child should be able to add and subtract multi digit problems before starting.

Multi-digit addition and subtraction are covered in 2D.

  2. My 7th grader is currently using Introduction to Algebra. I see that they recommend the Counting + Probability book next, but I'm wondering if we can go straight to Intro to Geometry for 8th grade instead? She is probably going to PS for high school and I'm wondering what will serve her better in preparation for that.

  3. My oldest will be in 7th.

If you’re not wanting to do a formal study, I would actually suggest getting the Song School DVD’s only. We loved the DVD’s. They have a discussion about the words and each week has the derivative river. They learn how Latin words are the root of words in all different languages. It’s really neat. Also, the DVD’s have a monkey that my kids love!!

I agree with this. The actual songs in book 1 are honestly kind of lame and my kids roll their eyes a lot. Having the DVD really helps and you could use that on it's own. The music in book 2 is much better.

Which volume do you have? I have volume 3 and I haven't been able to find anything that explains using SOTW in the middle years.

I have the 3rd edition and still had that section bookmarked, starting on page 278.

We take a more simplified approach compared to what is in the book, but we do SOTW (plus maps and review questions) as a family and then my middle schooler does research, outlining and writing later in the week.

  6. I have a layered system too.

    - zippered/encased waterproof allergen cover - we have never had to take these off

    - fitted waterproof mattress pad - I found some at Target that are very nice and affordable. We even got one for our bed.

    - waterproof pads - the best seller hospital grade pads found on Amazon. They make one that covers the whole length of a twin bed, but for our needs the smaller size works well and is less bulky to wash.

  7. My oldest has been taking lessons this year and has used a hand-me down keyboard from a neighbor. I know that what we have is not suitable to continue with and we are needing to upgrade. Her piano teacher suggested getting something with weighted keys and a pedal. Is this possible at all in the $300ish price range new? I have a Walmart giftcard if there is something I can order from their website. (I also checked Sam's Club but they only have one model and I'm not sure it's suitable. link )

We are not wanting a real piano right now - possibly in a few years.

    TIA

  8. I’d just keep doing what I was doing. Having seen the local jr high GT writing curriculum I can safely assume just about anything I found at a homeschool store would be better, as long as it wasn’t titled “Creative Writing with Zero Empahsis on Grammar,†in which case we’d break even. But as long as you have a program and work the program consistently you’re likely to be okay.

I tend to agree with this. If you want to continue with Writing and Rhetoric that will cover a lot.

  9. Remarriage/blending is just hard, regardless of whether or not new children are added. I'm another who agrees that the maturity of all adults involved probably affects the outcome more than anything.

My dad is in his 4th marriage. It has been a long marriage now and hopefully continues to be, but there have been struggles. They did not plan to have any additional children but got a surprise. Absolutely none of the family's problems have ever been related to the new child. Truthfully, the biggest contributor would be wife #3.

In contrast, my mom has rarely even dated. I don't know if that has really been her preference (it's hard in a small town) but I think it was probably better for me as a child.

  10. If your Dh doesn't want to change bedrooms, I like the idea of storing more in your bedroom. Do you have room for a bookcase or a desk/table that someone could do school at during the week? The little one's clothes could be in your room for a while.

DD's room should also be housing a little extra storage since she doesn't share. You mentioned one loft bed - maybe it could go in her room? You could have a desk/work surface on wheels that could slide out from under the loft. Use the rest of the space for toy bins.

We hang up all shirts so the kids don't need a lot of drawer space. When they were younger they just had those plastic drawer units in their closets.

If bunk/loft beds don't work there are also captain beds that have built in drawers underneath.
