  1. I did this very same thing with BKF and with a magic eraser.  Now my enamel is brown up to a certain level of the pot (halfway down and the bottom).  I don't know if it was because of the two cleaning methods or because of food but I'd try other methods first. I read boiling baking soda and other methods like letting certain liquids (vinegar, baking soda paste) sit over night may be less abrasive.

The inside of my Kirkland Dutch oven was indoctrinated to my kitchen the same way - burnt black beans.

I just learned dutch ovens aren't meant to ever sit on a burner higher than a 5 unless they have water only in them.  News to me.

  2. whitestavern, we would have fun cooking together~

    Are you on plantoeat?

I tried an experiment of cooking through a cookbook yesterday.  Was in the kitchen, idk, 5 hours making the first 5/6 recipes in the Oh She Glows cookbook.

The kids' and in-laws' comments were hysterical.  Especially when it came to trying the chia seed pudding.  Funniest one - my mother in-law asks me wearily - how many recipes are in this cookbook?

I did make the best granola I've ever had though so the day was not a loss.  I just don't think we are cut out to be vegans.  I have 5 vegan cookbooks but...well..it's more of something I make people eat around here, not anyone's top choice.

I can't bear to put anything in it.  Sure sign it needs to go back.  I'm afraid to even put it on the stove, lol.

(I used a new mover discount so it wasn't quite so high, but that is still a whole!!!! lotta money to spend on a pot.)

  4. I'm just curious what you would say about yourself.  Not necessarily what others would say about you.

If you say yes - why?  What makes you a good cook?  What has helped you to get there?  When did it change for you from managing to get food into people's mouths because it's a necessity and your becoming a good cook?

    And if no -

do others say you are but you don't think so?

What defines a "good cook" in your mind?

    I ask

    1) I lack confidence in cooking but my family/friends think I'm good at it.  I wonder when this will change for me.  I think there are so many things to learn - I just learned the premise of hot pan/cold fat for goodness sake!  I couldn't fry an egg without it sticking five months ago.

    2) I am ready to get seriously into cooking (whatever that means).  Maybe professional classes, school, making it more of apart of my life than it already is.(Most days I'm cooking for 7-10 people).  I'm not sure what that means or where it will take me but I'm excited to get better and want it to mean more - impact more than just our own bellies?idk - than just for my peeps and the crew of guests we host after church and for dinners.

  5. Opened canned pumpkin covered with foil, in fridge since appx last Thursday.

I'm thinking it's fine...but...a nagging voice in the back of my head is saying but what about botulism...lol.  I'm off to read about just that.

  6. I'm switching too.  I have a friend with a child one year younger going through Righstart A and now is in level B.

My daughter did a few weeks of B so I know where she's going when she talks about her child's math abilities.  I called her yesterday to check in and see how it has been going.  My main concern is that there are no drills and will those math facts we are all so concerned with in America be as cemented in a program like Rightstart as in something like Rod and Staff.

My daughter does have the facts of addition and subtraction down for numbers 1 through 11.  We've drilled and killed them for two years now with Rod and Staff.  However, if you were to ask her WHY 5+6 is 11 and 6+6 is 12 - she cannot give you an answer.  She doesn't know how to explain addition to me, really.  She can recite - but isn't understanding why.

My friend's child however, just did a problem (in her head mind you) where she was adding two 4 digit numbers but was doing it from left to right.  She caught herself as to making the mistake because she realized one of the columns would need to carry over.  She adjusted and got the answer correct.  At 6 years old and understood (albeit her vocabulary was young to fully describe) why.

For her to intuitively know about carrying and auto-correct herself in such a situation is one of the aims I'm trying to reach for with math.

As you can see from the above, I don't think Rod and Staff is going to get us there.

Also, I talked to the owner of Videotext Algebra yesterday about a different student - he calls himself "the WHY guy" and he said he hoped I was using Rightstart with my youngest to help her understand the mathematical concepts from the beginning.

  7. I agree with Annie G.  I don't usually use the chicken carcass anymore.  Used to when I felt that's what prudent frugal mom's do and just dumped it in covered with water and did most of the above.  Still never came out like the rich chicken soup I desired.

But the America's Test Kitchen group has a hearty chicken noodle soup I like.  They do use a whole chicken.

This is the keeper for me and I've tried about 10 years worth of recipes.  Maybe it is just suited to my family's taste but everyone - I have old and young here - loves it.   A bit time consuming and sometimes I get carried away with the chicken base (Better Than Buillion I buy in bulk at Costco)  - but when I follow directions it really is - comforting and yum!

    Hope this helps.

I have a good/quick chicken pot pie recipe as well if you're interested.  That was another monster to tame as an inexperienced cook.

And the pioneer woman chicken tortilla soup has been requested numerous times around here as well if the same old chicken noodle becomes boring :)

  8. Orlando was awesome!  We ended up getting a free dress and a $60 hairdo and makeover at the Bippity Boppity Salon in the palace of Magic Kingdom.  Afterwards I found out you usually have to reserve a spot 6 months in advance!!  Three days was plenty to do Disney - by the 4th day we were dragging and we actually got a refund because day 5 sounded like torture instead of fun :)

We stayed on Pawley's Island at the beginning of the trip - just south of Myrtle Beach.  Nice and quiet, learned that beachfront does not mean ocean view :) according to Orbitz.  Also learned it is better to book directly through the hotel than a third party.

On the way back from Disney, we stayed in Isle of Palms right outside of Charleston.  I LOVED Charleston!!!  We hit the second Sunday which meant Kings Street was closed to traffic.  Great street party atmosphere - we saw lots of things we don't get to see everyday.  To include a man with a stroller just for his miniature poodle!

We visited Rainbow Row and toured the city market.  We ate great food - was restaurant week - and shopped till we dropped.

Thanks for all your help - it was a perfect vacation!

  9. Just to stay at before we get to Orlando - I'm sorry we're kind of frazzled with so many last minute details.

I figured once we get to Orlando we will want to be at the pools and theme parks.

So I was thinking it might be nice to begin our trip with a stopover in a cool town on the way down (Savannah?).  We would then spend a night before our arrival in Orlando in a beach town like the previous suggestion of Clearwater.  I'm asking because I don't know the areas at all and don't know what are the "must see" spots in the area.

  10. Sending me to easywdw is like sending a mom to the Hive when she just decided to take her kid out of public school :)

Acronyms, do this don't do that, fastpass time commitments.

Will we survive if I just wing it, show up for the sights, ride what looks fun, eat when/where we feel like it and catch a show or two?

(starting to hyperventilate - I don't know what Fantasmic even is - feel like that's the equivalent of not knowing what Saxon math is!)

  11. "but as of the 4th, crowds will be at their lowest, and weather should be pretty nice. "

Friends saying it might be super crowded and maybe we shouldn't go.  I called for ticketing info and she said they closed Magic Kingdom earlier today due to capactiy :(

We can do Hilton Head as well and see Charleston and Savannah for day trips.

Soo thankful to have such a choice to make, I am stunned and surprised and grateful~
