  1. Reading about Charlotte Mason always does this to me.  I know AO is more than "just" reading books but I tend to gravitate toward my "dream idea" of homeschooling when the workbooks are piling up and the fire and the couch beckon  me to grab kids and cuddle up with popcorn and hot chocolate.

Believe it or not, SWB's WTM also makes me think school can be much simpler and as long as we read lots of good books with a few basics, my kids will be incredibly well educated.

Maybe you would benefit by rereading some core helps that inspired you to begin schooling and make sure you're still on track?  I've done this, multiple times.  We've swung from WTM to TOG to SL and are now, pretty much in the MP camp.  Lots of workbooks but a great schedule with lots of free time so far to read anything we want.  She's still young though.  The olders - well, they don't seem to have the luxury of so many options.

  2. " know this is a zombie thread, but since others have replied to it today. .."

I know, I'm sorry.  I am just about to buy new dishes and saw this and didn't think about the zombie issue.  :)

  3. I started with Fiestaware when we got married, and just last year switched to all white at dh's request. He has pieces in all different shapes and sizes and sets a beautiful table.

That is amazing to me, especially since I'm more worried over setting the table than roasting the 20 lb turkey.

I guess we all have our skills :)

  4. I'm with you, just saying sometimes I don't post something when someone asks for healthy because it usually has butter in it.  Ignore me, lol.  Hate to derail a wonderful thread ~ I'm thankful for it.  Found two things I want to try

I edited the other reply.  Sorry.

  5. I just went to a pie class.  The instructor had us roast a sugar pumpkin, puree it and made that into a pumpkin pie.  We also made a cheddar crusted apple pie.  The third one we did was a chocolate pecan.  I don't like pecan pie but it was good.

I have also made a bourbon pear crumble which was incredible with fresh whipped cream.  That was from this cookbook

The best, best best I've made so far though was this

    UHHHHHHmaaazing.

I got mine from the Menu cookbook she quotes.  That is one great cookbook too, btw.

  6. "He probably did make fantastic crust. Lard makes an excellent crust but I find it difficult to obtain good lard and I tend to prefer the flavor with savory pies."

I have been almost obsessed with reading about pie crust lately, lol.  I'll say I bought lard from a friend and the crusts I made with it were - amazingly flaky and tasted wonderful.

I think the taste could have been off because some folks who do their own burn the bottom and that imparts "off" flavor throughout the whole batch.

Just saying - don't give up on lard :)

I could talk/read pie all day!

  7. I wasn't preheating the pan!

The idea of hot pan, cold oil is crucial.  Somehow I've missed that in all my self teaching regarding cooking.

So, preheat the pan till water drops dance across surface.  Not too hot or butter will burn!  Then add cold butter, add cold eggs, let cook but not burn!  Voila, out they slide :)))))))))))))))))))))))

Okay, you can resume schooling = had to share that with someone who cares.

(I'm soo happy I don't need to buy the nonstick skillets I was shopping for on Amazon!  My stainless and cast iron both performed beautifully using this method.)

  8. I am looking for a device that can play audiobooks that I hope to download from the library.

I'm not especially thrilled about games and other visual distractions so I don't want an ipod touch or ipad mini.

We have an old ipod nano, I think, but it is giving me issues and isn't really intuitive for her.

The playaways from the library are awesome (plug in headphones, put in batteries and off she goes) but we've gone through the non-scary ones and are not at all interested in the magic - dark themed junk that seems to make up most of the library inventory.

  9. Norwex

worked great for about 6 months

    now they reeeeek

I haven't used fabric softener and I have used bleach.  Maybe therein lies the problem.

I also haven't done the boiling thing I know they mentioned at the home show when I bought them.

So if I don't want the expense of buying more Norwex what other products might I look at?

  10. Each of these have recommendations...

Edited - the third one I linked was the duplicate of the second.  I guess I copied that third one wrong.  I found these by searching for tavern...plenty of them in Wmsbg.
