Hi Everyone. I'm new/coming back. My son, now 12, has been studying in Spanish for the past 3 years and has fallen behind in English. I feel overwhelmed trying to catch him up. Everything I have read says he must write ... not only read. But I'm not sure how MUCH as he is a bit ADD and somewhat Oppositional. Where do I start so he can write a little each day, but not have meltdowns? I'm not sure where or how to post this? Thanks to anyone who can help me.. over here, back to homeschooling in Panama. Elizabeth

Dd reading S-L-O-W-L-Y - what do I do?
Elizabeth Slagle replied to Shelly in VA's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Your child may be very auditory and processing slowly because she has to "hear" the word before she understands it. MANY slow readers are this way and it is normal and they just need extra time! I did a thesis on this. If there are not apparent problems, she may just be auditory. Does she learn by listening? Does she have trouble reading when Lyrics/songs are in the background, or tv? This may be how her brain is wired. -
Looking at the list of 5th grade curriculas, nothing I am looking at is being used! Egad. I'm looking at Winston for grammar, LLATL for enhancing Language Arts, Lively Latin (although do I need it? My DS is learning Spanish); Saxon Math, and Possibly enhancing with Magic Lens and Word within a Word. Any feedback on any of these is appreciated!

Need help! Concerns about 6.5yr old reading!
Elizabeth Slagle replied to calledtobehome's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Ok. This is normal. Some children are fast, easy readers. Others are not. he may be more auditory and "hearing" the words. Some kids are visual and read faster. That is ONE example of why this area is so diverse. Most important is that he is not frustrated. You know, Waldorf School doesn't even worry about reading skills till 8 years old. So calm calm calm. He is just processing differently that the other child. Let him take his TIME, and enjoy. Feel successful and move foward. It will be ok! E -

Fidgety 5th Grader English/L.A. help

Thanks! I will look it all up! -
I have a fidgety boy with the attention span of a flea, but very bright, tactile (a real mover) and auditory. What Grammar and Language Arts program will work best for him? He did well with Saxon Math, but that may be because dad taught it (dad is visual and rigid and comfortable with math). My son is dramatic, moves a LOT, sings, fidgets and smart. Help? I have looked at SO many... and again, I need grammar AND language arts. Can anyone give me direction?

My son is a fidgety tactile learner with a short attention span. He is dramatic and bright. I was looking at Hake Grammar and other traditional/classic programs, but I'm afraid he won't have the tolerance. Are there any good comprehensive Language Arts or Grammar programs out there that a figety, smart boy won't hate? I'm pretty new at this home schooling! Thanks! Elizabeth in Panama
