  1. I need something to help me get control of two ds, ages 10 and 12. Any great ones? Thanks, Kim
  2. Thank you, ladies, for replying. I didn't understand it to be hereditary, in their cases, just the way the crowding in the bottom front teeth are causing them to "tilt" forward, pushing the gum downward. I thought I would check here to see if anyone else's children had run into this. I really just don't know what to make of it. Of course, if they need it, I want to have it done. But this is just something I have never heard of before, especially in kids, and all of a sudden BOTH my boys need it!?! But, this dr is supposed to be "the best around", so I just don't know. Thanks again for your help. Kim
  3. Our pediatric dentist referred both of my ds to a periodontist for "gum recession" evaluation. Sure enough, he said they both need gum grafts. He said it is no big deal, a very simple procedure where they take a scrape of gum from up top and lay it over the area. It is "taped" there and will begin to grow without stitches. We ran into an 11 yo girl checking out who had it done 2 wks ago and she and her mother said it was not painful and she healed quickly. But both my boys at such a young age? I've never even heard of this procedure until now. I thought about a second opinion, but this dr is supposed to be the best in the area.:glare: Anyone have any experience or suggestions? I just do know what to do next! Thanks- Kim
  4. Here's a link someone posted awhile back. HTH. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/ Kim
  5. Thanks for your responses! I guess a lot would depend on how many time per week we covered science. Right now, we have only done twice a week for about 45 minutes each. At grades 5, 6, 7, how much time and how often do you ladies do? Thanks! Kim
  6. I love the look of the Apologia Astronomy and would like to tie that in with the Universe book! ;) This shouldn't be a problem in a house where science hardly ever gets done, right? Go ahead... let me have it...I'm ready.... Kim
  7. Has anyone combined several of the God's Design books successfully into one year? I really like the looks of them, but at 35 lessons each and 3 books in each division, I would take forever to finish them, especially around our house! I was hoping to combine each set of 3 books into one year. Possible? Suggestions? Thanks! Kim
  8. I guess I needn't jump ship with CLE just yet. This is something we can supplement fairly easily. It just throws me when I see another curriculum teaching something our's isn't! You had some great ideas and Kate, that website is awesome! Thanks again! I always look forward to answers from here! :bigear: Kim
  9. We are using CLE math, and I just realized it doesn't cover Roman numerals in much detail at all. Two to three lessons is it. How necessary is this skill? Ideas for supplementation? I have been looking at samples of other math programs, I don't really know why. CLE is working ok here. I looked at Horizons 3 and it had Roman numerals. Makes me think I need to rethink things. Time for curriculum panic to set in! Time to switch math programs? Thanks so much! Kim
  10. Your responses have given me a lot to think about. Something else I happened to think of is that I was also planning to start with WT or CW, thinking these would complement TOG 1 nicely. Would it be better to use something with TOG 3 such as IEWs themed bases program? Any other program that would be a good fit? I know TOG has the WAid, but would it be enough? Thanks for all the help and sorry for all the questions! Kim
  11. Thanks for the reply, Jessica. I just can't decide if it would be better to go back again and start at the beginning, just continue on from where we are, or if it even matters! It just kind of seemed like LL would be a nice complement to TOG 1, since it includes history and such. But, I guess that really doesn't matter either! Decisions, decisions! Thanks again! Kim
  12. I want to start LL and TOG in the fall. I'm just not sure where in TOG to start! My 2 ds will be 5th and 7th. We have done a terrible job at covering history! We have just studied, hit and miss, here and there. We made it thru about 1/2 of SOTW 1 and this year we jumped to Vikings and have only made it to Jamestown. Being boys, they seem more interested in the wars and such that we could cover if we jump in TOG where we are timewise. They really didn't care much for Ancients, but I did a lousy job of planning. But, I think it would be better on one hand to go back and start at the beginning, so things will flow better. And it seems LL would complement the Anciencts nicely. Also, with my older, I need a long range plan to cover the cycles and periods thru high school. I don't want to get to hs and think I should have timed it differently for credits and such. Any opinions on where to start and what plan to follow thru hs?:confused1: Thanks for your help! KIm
  13. I'm actually very excited about using it! It looks like you could learn so much! Susan, you mentioned the audio downloads. Are those at the LL site? I didn't see them, if they are. Also, do you print at home in color or b/w or take them somewhere to be copied? I just have a HP 1315 and really don't know how many color pages I can get from a cartridge. Thanks again! You all have me excited! Kim
  14. I am looking at LL for the fall and really love the look of it. I have no Latin background, yet this looks fairly easy to teach. But, I have some questions. Is LL only available as an e-book? If so, do you feel it is worth the price considering all the printing you have to do on your own? The BB1 is only 17 lessons? How far will that take you? Is it enough for a year? I didn't see anything on the site about pronunciation cds. Are they available? If not, how do you know how to pronounce correctly? Thanks so much! Kim :bigear:
  15. Just bumping and hoping for someone that knows the set I saw! Kim
  16. I think I would like to get one, just don't know which one! Does anyone have one they would recommend that either comes with the handheld as a set or comes apart to use as a handheld? Thanks! Kim
  17. Thank you for your replies. Some of these I had not seen yet after hours of searching the internet! You have gotten me off to a great start! Thanks again! Kim
  18. I have two ds, 9 & 11. I want to do a Christian Easter lapbook. I can't find one ready made (that's a freebie!), so I'm trying to find things to include. Any links or suggestions on things to include? Blessings! Kim
  19. Thanks for those. I was able to get some things, but the problem I keep running into, is a lot of the links I try to use are no longer good links! I wonder what happens to them? Oh, the ages would be 9 & 11, in case anyone finds anything else! Thanks for the help! Kim
  20. I have been searching for a couple of hours now and can't find something ready to go. Does anyone know of anything that has all the info in one place? Thanks! Kim
  21. I had a spot on my chest (the part that always show with a v-neck) that turned out to be the basal C word! I was totally scared to death. Just the mention of cancer and I thought it was the beginning of the end! I cried off and on for days! As it turned out, it was really okay. They removed it about 6 years ago and no problems since! It's just amazing the stigma one word can carry! I'm glad they caught yours so soon! Try not worry about it! I know its hard not to, but it really will be OK! ;) Blessings, Kim
  22. We are required to test for the first time at the end of grade 3 and at least every three years after that. I am curious to see how they will do in the other subjects areas as well. Kim
  23. I posted earlier today regarding my two ds "being behind" in math. If one is 4th grade, but doing 3rd grade math and the other is 6th grade doing 5th grade math, what IOWA test do I have them take? Thanks! Kim
  24. A couple of you mentioned CLE being ahead, but that's another thing that has me concerned. While I have no intention of switching programs yet again, a close hsing friend looked through my ds books and gave an "Oh my, these are soooo behind A Beka" opinion with a look mixed in of "How could you do this to your children". Kinda' makes you rethink the whole hs thing! Maybe I should have left them in ps! Blessings, Kim
  25. I have two ds that are way behind, especially in math. This is due mainly to us switching math programs repeatedly in the early years, trying to find the "perfect" one that would make math FUN and make the lightbulb come on. I all the searching and changing, we have settled in with CLE for the long haul. Problem is, one son "should be" 4th grade now (his birthdate is 4/21/98) and is currently working out of LU 307. We "should be" in about 408! Other son "should be" 6th grade now (his birthdate is 6/9/96) and is currently working out of LU 503! We "should be" in about 608! He is probably what would be diagnosed ADHD in a big way. We have not wanted to go the medication route and are trying to work this out without it, but daily work is a huge struggle. Is there some plan or method to "catch up" where we "need" to be. I keep using all the "", because I wonder if where the public schools say they need to be is what I should be going by anyway. My 9yo is small for his size, so he is always the smallest in co-op classes and things that are divided by grade level. This makes him always feel bad. My 11yo, I feel, lacks the maturity and focus of what would be needed of a junior high student. But, I don't want them to feel the stigma of being "held back" a grade. Family is always critical of our choice to homeschool, and me letting them get behind is only supporting their beliefs! I am torn between holding them back in the fall, which would make it much easier to get back on track grade wise, or pushing ahead. So, if I decide to avoid the holding back, is there a general plan to get caught up. I don't know whether to try two lessons a day, which for my ADHD ds would probably take all day, or try skipping some things. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and Blessings, Kim
