Robin in DFW
Would this be a decent product to use for a high school student? The samples at the site and on RR look thorough and none too easy. My dd has had grammar several times, but not this year as the focus has been on writing, writing and more writing. I just thought something like this might be useful as a last grammar program for her. Thanks, Robin
4wildberrys
Absolutely! It's what I have used with my 10th grader this year----she has learned SOO much! And I love the Saxon index numbers next to each problem that let you quickly flip to the lesson and refresh your memory. Emailing Mark Hake last summer, I seem to remember her basically saying that finishing up Hake 8 gives more grammar knowledge than your average incoming college student? Don't quote me---but I am pretty sure what I remember her saying.
YJ in AL
My kids have really enjoyed using this, and I have used Hake 8 with my ds when he was in 10th grade, for review. It is thorough and easy to keep up with for my kids. Ds says that he retained more from his year of Hake than from the other programs we have used. My younger dc saw his book and begged to switch over to Hake, so now I get to fork over the big bucks! Yvonne in AL
Robin in DFW
Good to hear it's a thorough as it looks! We also like the incremental approach! Robin:001_smile:
LanaTron
Good to know. My ds is using Hake 7 this year (7th) and I know he's learning things I didn't learn until 11th or 12th grade! I am starting to go over the lessons with him, not just letting him read it himself, and we are slowing things down, doing only half of the review set in one day. I think this will be a more comfortable pace for both of us, and he can use Hake 8 for 9th/10th.
Grace
I like the looks of Hake Grammar. Does anyone know how it compares to Analytical Grammar? Would it be over-kill to do Hake for 7th and 8th grade and then do Analytical Grammar in High School? Also, Are you all using the writing portion too or just the grammar part? Does the student write in the text? Is it meant to be a work-text, like Abeka? Thanks so Much, Grace

One idea is if you use Hake for 7th and 8th, you could then just use the AG review books for high school. I am using IEW instead of the Hake writing. I started out using it with our IEW, but the method is really different and it ended up being overkill--duh! I have my kids write in the book---otherwise there is SO much to copy and write down in a notebook. Besides, there seems to be enough room provided in the books to write---so it looks to me it is meant to be a worktext. With my kids---this program would have been a guaranteed complaining torture session if they had to do all those problems in a separate book :tongue_smilie:
LanaTron
Also, Are you all using the writing portion too or just the grammar part? Does the student write in the text? Is it meant to be a work-text, like Abeka? Thanks so Much, Grace My ds wasn't nearly ready for the writing in Hake, so he's using WWE level 3 and Writing Strands level 3 this year. Also, we are not using the book as a worktext. It was too $$ for that, IMO, and I have 3 other dc coming up who can use it. My ds does his work on a whiteboard, but, as I mentioned, we don't do all of the lesson in one day. HTH, Lana
