Creekside5
All, I was planning on using Latin Prep 1 and 2 with my sixth grader next year. He has already had Latin for Children A and B, but didn't really enjoy them. We loved the looks of Latin Prep, but now they are out of print. We were really excited about the humor and rigor of these books. He loves to translate and HATES busy work. I have looked everywhere for the Latin Prep book 1. I can pay about 60 dollars just for the main book on Amazon, but that seems crazy. Has anyone looked at the new Galore Park Latin curriculum? I have no idea what to make of it. Should I try and get my hands on SYRWTLL before that is gone too? Help this mama with new Latin woes.
SilverMoon
Have you considered Latin Alive instead? It has a whole different feel and approach and is higher interest. A 6th grader with that much Latin already would be totally fine to start LA. You may need to add your own review (Quizlet etc).
Laura Corin
It looks as if So You Really Want to Learn Latin is still available. That was Galore Park's original Latin programme, but it was designed for age 13 and up, so it moves a bit faster. Abebooks still has LP in stock https://www.abebooks.com/products/isbn/9781902984988?clickid=wT51YgRK3wBrwSf0f4XQt0A3UkhSAfXl2StFzc0&cm_mmc=aff-_-ir-_-64682-_-77798&ref=imprad64682&afn_sr=impact Edited July 20, 2017 by Laura Corin
blondeviolin
Well, this is super sad. 😒 We were planning taking a year of review with LA and the LP workbook for my sixth grader who just finished Latin prep and then move into LP 2, but now I guess we'll have to figure out what's next. Looks like Latin Prep 2 is still available for a reasonable price. I would snatch it up before it goes away though. I just don't understand what they are replacing it with. There has been very little information out there. LP1 was just gone and could only be found for high prices.
Laura Corin
Galore Park was bought by a big publisher and the founder retired. He had started the company to publish the book he wrote for teaching Latin to those aged 13 to 16 (SY Latin). He saw a gap in the market for books aimed at UK prep schools (age 8 to 13), so commissioned Latin Prep and other books. I fear that the new big company sees the two Latin programmes as duplication, rather than complementary. And more children in the UK learn Latin later rather than earlier. The death of the author of LP may also give them an excuse to avoid making revisions and new editions.
StartingOver
Oh goodness. I am super glad now that I purchased the whole set last year.
Creekside5
Thanks Laura, I couldn't understand why it was happening and what was going on. Thanks for clearing it up. Should I assume their new product is not as good as their old two? I think we are going to go ahead and do SYRWTL. If any one wants to sell me their old Latin Prep, I'd gladly buy it for a reasonable price!
