EndOfOrdinary
Can anyone comment on using ThinkWell AP science classes? Do they contain any depth at all? Or are they more rote? Where do they fall between highly engaging and knaw your leg off to escape? Are they scaffolded at all, or more just put everything out there and figure it out? I am considering purchasing them so Ds has science to do without me. Shifting more and more classes away from Mom is a big deal over the next year or two. He won't be taking the AP test at this point, but has already done a full year of standard high school bio and high school chem. This is more to directly work on independent time management, study skills, and not spending all day watch YouTube experiment videos (his idea for science next year). Thanks! EndOfOrdinary
Thinkwell uses Flash which cannot be supported with an iPad. Back to the drawing board.
quark
Ah, sorry about that. I was going to comment but our experience was unschooling their AP Bio just out of interest. No labs and without taking the exam. He had a lot of fun watching the videos and discussing with me. Purely interest based. It was a lot of put it out there and answer quiz questions but the presenter (Wolfe) made it all worthwhile. I engaged him a bit more with additional living books and that caused a lot of bunny trailing and taking longer with the course (our usual mode for sciences in those earlier years).
EndOfOrdinary
No worries, quark. I am still trying to find something with a bit of the scaffolding in place that allows him to have to take the reigns. I am still considering ThinkWell, the lack of iPad is just a very large deterrent. Good to know your Ds liked it. Taking the AP test is more than likely not going to happen. I would like Ds to take the tests and exams for the course so he can get an official grade. This concept is both alluring and daunting to him. It seems like a good time to break the ice a bit. It might completely devolve into unschooling...who knows :)
gstharr
I don't know about the ap class, But I'll let you know about tw chemistry--college level at the end of the summer. I am helping a struggling freshman get on track.
