Greetings! Does anyone have a recommendation for a book to introduce poetry to a 5th grade boy? I've been remiss in the last couple of years to include poetry in our homeschooling. I'm looking for something fun and interesting. Your recommendations are greatly appreciated!

We use the Poetry For Young People Series when we do a poet study...it's very colorful and picks "kid-friendly" poems.  For extra fun, we get out the Shel Silverstein poetry books.  Another book we've enjoyed is Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices.  Recently I picked up the Random House Book of Poetry For Children and it looks really great...We've only read a dozen or so poems from it so far though.  I imagine it will become a favorite.

I have a ridiculous amount of poetry books.

Another favorite resource has been the Year 1 AO poetry selections.  They are organized by months of the year and have lots of great classic poems.

The best poetry resources I've seen are the poetry components of the Michael Clay Thompson Language Arts program (aka MCT aka MCTLA).

The poetry books in the series are advanced compared to the other components, so the first level (ordinarily 3rd Grade) is pretty deep in addition to being fun and inspirting.

Really outstanding!

The MCT poetry books were the only part of the program we really liked. They are really good.

But if you haven't read much poetry, I'd just go get lots of poetry books from the library. See what they've got. Read lots of things. Get children's poetry books like Jack Prelutsky, Marilyn Singer, Shel Silverstein, Lee Bennet Hopkins, Judith Viorst, etc. Joyful Noise, mentioned above, is one of our favorites as well. Get collections - the Barefoot Book of Classic Poetry is a good one, the Caroline Kennedy collections are really nice with great illustrations, Sing a Song of Popcorn is a good older children's poetry collection... there are a ton of them out there. And get a few that are of famous poets - Carl Sandburg and Langston Hughes are both good "famous" adult poets to start with IMHO, but there are plenty of others out there.

And then make a time to read poetry sometimes. Do a poetry tea once a week. Or just start every day by you picking a poem and him picking a poem. After you've done it a little while, you can start to add a little analysis. Talk about the poems. Try the MCT books or the Poetry for Young People books.
