visitor
Dear all, I was wondering if it is really necessary to do all the HIG tasks. Most of the time DS understands all the TB, WP and IP books by himself. He also don't need all the drill work. Het gaps it really easy whitout forgetting things. For grade 3 I am going to switch to Beast Academy. I feel that Singapore Math is to eassy for him.
desertflower
Just so you know, you aren't alone. :) Unfortunately, I hadn't done much from the hig either. Not by choice. I hope I'm not missing something! I would say that the challenging word problems is a good book. I have been skipping the word problems in the workbook for the ones in the CWP book. I can't wait to hear what the more experienced moms have to say.

EKS
Beast Academy didn't exist when my son was at that level, so I can't speak to that. But as far as the HIG goes--I didn't really use it either. Before beginning Singapore math with my younger son, I read the book Elementary Mathematics for Teachers, which gives an excellent overview of how to teach SM effectively. After that I was able to intuitively know what activities would help my son understand each concept. As far as SM being too easy, you might need to accelerate for a while to find where your son is challenged. My goal was to find the spot where my son *needed* some instruction in order to learn. So we accelerated until he was a few years ahead of age, which helped somewhat. We also used the CWP books for extra challenge. Getting back to the HIG/activities--if my son didn't need an activity to *fully* understand a concept then we skipped it. But by full understanding, I'm not just talking about being able to do procedures--he had to demonstrate to me that he had solid conceptual understanding of whatever it was as well.
