Just for fun ~ tangents that derail the lesson

I left Dad & ds2 studying AMC8 solutions. I could hear lightbulbs going off and I was excited for Dad that he gets to experience some of those moments.

I returned later & found them intently studying...a Rubik's Cube.

They swear it's valuable & falls in the same category as AMC8 solutions...logic & math.

I would prefer they stick to the plan, but they are having so much fun I wouldn't dare redirect :).

If your plan went off the rails sometime this week...I'd love to hear I'm not alone :).

Not just this week. This happens almost all the time. :D One of the reasons we've never finished our study of ancient history, one of the reasons why we started rocketry, one of the reasons why I don't think we could ever just study a handful of Shakespeare plays. Just one of the reasons why I big heart adore homeschooling. Hope you enjoy more of these moments!

So... Rubik's Cubes can be a perfect intro to group theory... see https://www.artofmathematics.org/books/games-and-puzzles

If you or DH can pursue the tangents in a worthwhile way, I would run with it.

Seriously, the "tangents" are one of THE PRIMARY REASONS we home school. <3

Thoughtful discussions with my middle-elementary kids about racism, economic influences, math in the workplace, kindness as a theme in literature - the "interruptions" give flavor and grace and JOY to the entire journey! Bring on the Rubiks cubes! (And Vi Hart, too!)

Exactly this. Sacha and I are currently learning about primates as part of our zoology unit. We watched some documentaries, read about the lives of famous primatologists, read The One and Only Ivan, watched videos about the real life Ivan on YouTube, and discussed animal rights and cruelty. We live down the street from Sea World -- a place that my son adores -- and 10 minutes from the San Diego Zoo. We talked about the frequent protests at Sea World and the debate over animals as entertainment vs. education, and whether there is a difference between the lives of the animals at Sea World vs. the Zoo. It's been a great week of homeschooling. :)
