siscokids
My son is just completing the 6th grade. He has been doing Saxon Algebra 1 this year. Neither of us are real thrilled with this program so I'm in need of a few good recommendations for next year. I need something that is strong in the math skills, but does not as my son puts it "Do the same problems every day with different numbers". Any suggestions would be welcome!! moki4
We are starting Algebra Videotext for our dd (5th). Good review for first module (which we are currently in). We like the short lessons. I have heard great things about VT and hope it works well for us! She completed Saxon Algebra 1/2, and didn't like all the repetition, either. Storm Bay
We're doing Dolciani, the 1965 one.
Leila
Teaching Textbook is great. We haven't done Algebra yet. We are still in the lower grades but I have heard so good things about their Algebra curriculum. Leila

Leila There have been a number of threads on Teaching Textbooks on the high school board you may wish to read. I used one, and would only recommend it for kids who struggle with math who are not planning to major in math or science.

Saxon has a peculiar and special approach to teaching math that no other program that I've seen has, which isn't to say that it's bad. Almost any other algebra program out there would teach it according to topic--NEM, Foerster, Dolciani, etc-- and your son would not be doing the same kind of problems every day. If you are otherwise happy with Saxon but just want him to do something interesting and challenging you might try supplementing with Gelfand's Algebra. kpupg
My son is just completing the 6th grade. He has been doing Saxon Algebra 1 this year. My son is on a similar timeline. This year for 7th, he's doing geometry. We use both NEM and Life of Fred, both of which are less drill-and-kill oriented than Saxon. bettyandbob
dd will be in 5th grade. The other night she and I watched the sample dvd. She really liked how the lesson was presented. We plan on mixing in Life of Fred too. Life of Fred may be a good program for you to review. The storyline is fun for the students (I personally find it a little painful, but I don't like stories where people are hurt or treated badly) and it really does cover math. We use it once a week, but some people use it as a complete program. I believe there are texts for all the standard high school math subjects (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc). NEM is also a good program, but I think it's best used if you did the Singapore program for lower levels and plan on using NEM all the way through since it doesn't designate the courses the same way we do in the US. Mom4Jesus
We just switched to Math U See and are happy with it. I like it that they have instructional DVD's for the parents that teach how to explain the concepts, especially since math isn't my strongest subject.
