Libby in Texas
Dd is entering the 11th grade this fall. When she took the PSAT and the PLAN she said the vocabulary really got her. Quite surprising if you ask me. She is willing to spend her summer studying vocab, cramming if necessary. Yup, I know, not recommended--but what to do? What vocab book should I get her? How would you go about this? Thanks! Please answer so I can order asap if necessary. Thanks! Blessings, Libby in Texas :)
Janie
One of my favorite new vocabulary books (it seems like I've started to collect them!) is Smart Words: Vocabulary for the Erudite (Harrison). Compact little book packed with words in fifteen different chapters. Each word entry give a short one word to short phrase defintion (I LOVE the conciseness of this) and an easy to use pronunciation, followed by a quite interesting blurb about the word, and finally a great sample sentence. This little book is just so interesting that I believe you dd might learn more from spending time in the book, transcribing a few words per day to a commonplace book, and practicing the use of the words. Other than this book, I would recommend a deliberate study in Vocabulary for the College-Bound Student which offers some activities to help learn new words. HTH!
