Michelle in AL
Does anyone have a reading schedule for Beowulf? For example read lines 1-500 on Monday and so on. I'm trying to decide how much reading to assign per day to my lit class.
Lori D.
We kept each day's reading fairly short to leave time for: - reading it aloud to hear the alliteration and rhythm - to lookup lots of unknown words - to discuss the unknown culture, themes, etc. We also tried to make the breaks at logical breaks in the storyline. (The subtitles listed below in parentheses are the ones in our Seamus Heaney translation.) The average was just under 320 lines per day for 10 days, with a low of 188 lines on day 1 (leaves you time to also read intro and background materials), and a high of 415 lines to include both Beowulf's fight with Grendel's mother and the celebration. Hope that is of help! Warmest regards, Lori D. day 1 = lines 1-188 (Prologue: Rise of the Danes; Heorot is Attacked) day 2 = lines 189-490 (The Hero Comes to Heorot) day 3 = lines 491-835 (Feast at Heorot; Fight with Grendel) day 4 = lines 836-1167 (Celebration at Heorot) day 5 = lines 1168-1382 (finish Celebration at Heorot; Another Attack) day 6 = lines 1383-1798 (Beowulf Fights Grendel's Mother; Another Celebration at Heorot) day 7 = lines 1799-2199 (Beowulf Returns Home) day 8 = lines 2200-2509 (The Dragon Wakes) day 9 = lines 2510-2820 (Beowulf Attacks the Dragon) day 10 = lines 2821-3182 (Beowulf's Funeral)

Lori D.
Thanks very much for sharing your hard work :) Blessings, Rita You're welcome! But no hard work -- just went back and looked at the little pencil arrows I marked in the margins of the book to show our start/stop points! ;) Enjoy Beowulf! Warmly, Lori D.
