ALEKS Math problem...Maybe.

Recommended Posts

My daughter is trying out the free trial for ALEKS math. I put her in pre-algebra just to see how she'd do and she's loving it so far. It moves a little faster then anything we've used so far and the reviews and worksheets have variety and I think that's what appeals to her.

The problem?

Singapore and the Key to Series have fallen by the wayside. She has picked up Life of Fred Fractions so ALEKS isn't her only math but it's by far the bulk of it. She'll spend an hour and a half to two hours on it a day and I'm a little reluctant to stick more math in front of her after that.

So is that a problem? Could we get away with just ALEKS and some LOF? Is there anyone else out there using ALEKS as their main curriculum?

My worry probably comes from hearing ALEKS may not have enough review (although that's probably an individual thing) plus the thought of leaving my beloved Singapore behind. I think I decided somewhere along the line that Singapore was practically magical. I also probably worry too much. :D

We are trying Aleks free trial also.

I find that it does have enough review. If your child gets enough problems right, the computer thinks your child has mastered the problems and moves on. However, some people may not realize that they can push the review button to get more review problems instead of waiting for the computer to automatically give the review.:001_smile:

We did the free trial and it worked so well for us that we are using it as our primary math for our 3rd grader. We do supplement other math as needed. I like that it won't let her move past something that she hasn't mastered, but if it is a difficult concept for her she can always go to different material until she is ready to try again. She is gaining confidence by watching that pie chart fill up and loves the games that they are rewarded with when they complete a section.
