How to change a smoke detector battery on a vaulted ceiling 24' off the floor?

Recommended Posts

We have a two-story house with a vaulted ceiling. There's a smoke detector all the way up in the peak. Its battery is chirping. Ugh. It's placed a good 3'+ away from the nearest wall, so our lean-to tall ladder wouldn't help since you wouldn't be able to reach the alarm while standing on the ladder. You'd have to have a ridiculously tall A-frame to reach it.

Any ideas? Someone I can hire to come do it, even?

Spiderman? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Maybe the local firemen would be willing to come help change it?

Yeah, really. "Go, go, gadget arms!" Elastagirl from The Incredibles would be a good help. I think I will call the fire department. If they can't do it they at least might know who could.

Update: We rented a 14' stepladder from Home Depot for $18. Since the electrician who wired our house was at least smart enough to place the alarm over the upstairs hallway, the 14' ladder was tall enough. I'm glad the beeping has stopped. :)

ROFL! I'm glad I caught this update! Sorry you had to buy a ladder... but hey, maybe you'll need it again soon! Er... I mean... something... nice. :)
