RhondaM.
Lesson 111 - Diagramming Adverb Clauses (page 486) The visitors arrived after midnight. 'After midnight' is diagrammed as an adverb clause. But...'after' is a preposition, so why isn't 'after midnight' a prepositional clause? Ok..hold on..I've skipped over to page 509...it says here: Prepositional phrases can be used as adverbs to modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Adverb phrases tell how, when, where, why and to what degree. An adverb phrase may be found in various places in a sentence. So, does this mean a prepositional phrase can be used as an adverb clause just as a noun can be used as a subject or direct object??? Sorry...I really am grammar stupid. :001_smile: RhondaM. I think so - what you are theorizing sounds right to me! But I'm a grammar newbie (R&S 5). I think it's also the same idea as a pronoun being used as an adjective as in "his shirt". "after midnight", I think, is being used to modify "arrived" - it answers the question "when".
MIch elle
that prepositional phrases can act as adverb or adjective clauses.
