Tree House Academy Posted February 5, 2009 Share Posted February 5, 2009 We are using GWG 4 right now and my oldest son is doing SO WELL with it. However, next year, we are picking up CW Homer (we are doing WT II right now). Anyway, I have an English degree and grammar is not something that scares me at all. I am confident in my ability to understand it and teach it. My son does well with it too. I guess what I am asking is, is there any good reason to use Harvey's over GWG 5? I have both and would just like to know if there is a good, compelling reason to go on with Harvey's and drop GWG come 5th grade? Any thoughts? I'm planning to use WT 2 with my 4th grader next year and then possibly move into CW for 5th grade. I've been interested in the grammar question, too. Tiramisu Posted February 5, 2009 Share Posted February 5, 2009 I just had my first look at Harvey's today, a friend's copy. Wow. What an incredible resource! It's very intense though. Maybe I'm a grammar wimp, but it might be a little much for some dc. I was thinking it might even scare my 13 yo. I would buy it if you could manage it, and see what you think. My impression is that the money would never be wasted, but I could see why some people would want to wait until their dc is a little older. My friend says it's the best, but she keeps a varied collection of grammar books to use with her dc and the ones she tutors based on their personal needs. HTH! It looks to be quite the resource, but maybe more intense than we need for 5th grade next year. I'm leaning to staying with R&S and using Harveys as a supplement. I do think I can handle the grammar...I just wonder if the "lofty" teaching style will work for my son. ??? He is doing really well with GWG 5 and I have made some posters to hang around the school room to remind him of the things he has learned thus far. This seems to be working really well for him.
