Laura Corin Posted April 21 Posted April 21 My sister has been diagnosed with this and it runs in families. My doctor has run a standard fasting blood panel on me and is now seeking advice from the specialist lipid clinic. Quote
Laura Corin Posted August 6 Author Posted August 6 In case this is useful to anyone else - two of my siblings have now been diagnosed. As there are no treatments outside of trials, we have been given lifestyle advice where appropriate and medication in order to reduce our other cardiac risks as far as possible. 1 Quote
YaelAldrich Posted August 6 Posted August 6 My husband's family has a history of high cholesterol and lipids so once I saw a study offering to check HLpA I asked him to enroll. They tested him and found her doesn't have this. He lowered his level through forgoing all meat (just fish 1-2 times a week) and almost all junk food. It's still not perfect but lower. 1 Quote

I hope it doesn't affect your daily life too much. I know that you are already very active, eat healthy, and are intentionally leading a very healthy lifestyle. 2 Quote
Soror Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I don't but I've heard of longevity doctors like Peter Atia discussing this so he might have useful information for you. 1 Quote

I had already brought my cholesterol down as of a few years ago with lifestyle changes. My weight is normal and my BP is low normal. So I'm now just on a statin to take the cholesterol even lower. 1 Quote

Thanks. I found this article which suggests the same course of action as my doctor is pursuing. https://peterattiamd.com/high-lpa-risk-factors/ Quote
Mona Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I first read about lp(a) in a book when I was researching natural ways to prevent heart disease because it runs in my family, and then found out that my dh has this. We looked into this more than 10 years ago because he didn’t want to make a ton of changes only to find out that he is genetically predisposed to having a heart attack. Niacin is the one supplement that has the most affect on lowering lp(a), he takes other supplements, too, and goes off and on carnivore over the years. A quick google search with lp(a) and niacin should return several studies. 1 Quote
