Hi

My older kids 15 and 16.5 have completed IEW Level A and B and all three Writing With Skill. I was going to wait for the new IEW advanced series which will be released later this year and finish off with their Rhetoric course. But, a friend mentioned Lost Tools of Writing and now I honestly don't know what to do.

Which writing would you finish off with? Any suggestions outside of my thinking would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I’m confused because IEW has had a level C for years—including an advanced communication class. But, you asked what I finished off with. I did use and like Lost Tools for one of mine in middle school and I still use some of what I learned from it. I loved the brainstorming techniques. For your age kids, though, I’d want to move to a program like Sharon Watson’s Power in Your Hands, which teaches a variety of essay styles.

With that background Lost Tools would be a step backwards.

For high school I really like Writing With a Thesis, Patterns for College Writing, and They Say I Say: The Moves that Matter. In that order, saving the latter for senior year. My nearly 15yo is currently working through Writing With a Thesis. It's been fabulous for them and I've enjoyed going through it again. It's also a solid preparation for Patterns.

Hello,Taryn. I would recommend writing a dissertation or a quality essay. This will help show the skills and level of education. Of course, writing such an academic paper is not an easy task and one must be well-prepared. Here are a couple of great essays from professional writers                     that you can use as examples. I advise you to pay attention to the structure and spelling. This will help you avoid common spelling errors.
