Poison ivy identification: that's a great one! Are they all just word based or do you have songs with any of them or some kind of memory help?

We use a lot of images and audio files.

So, the poison ivy is just a bunch of pictures I gathered online of poison ivy and poison ivy look alikes. Each one just asks if it is poison ivy and then tells them the answer.

All the Spanish includes audio so they can hear the words/idioms/etc to help with pronunciation and memorization.

All the countries/birds/ clouds/art works/etc include images.

I also include a lot of ways they can think about information to help remember it: Mnemonics, memory hints, example sentences, etc. For example, for the rock cycle, the card is just a very visual diagram of the entire rock cycle with a box obscuring a particular step or phrase that they need to provide. That way they learn each piece of information within the context of the entire system.

What’s your system for creating your anki decks? I tried it in the oat but couldn’t keep up with making new cards.

Many of the decks I use are shared decks from AnkiWeb. I just find the ones that are closest to what I want my kids to learn, and fine tune them...deleting unwanted cards, shifting what fields are on the front and back of cards, add audio pronunciations, etc. Otherwise I make a whole subdeck at a time. Or, I once had my oldest make Anki cards as his output for history - he made his own review deck as he read through his book.

Since my kids have SO MANY cards (my oldest has 32813 cards in his deck), I rely on two features to not let Anki become overwhelming.
1 - I carefully set how many new and review cards should be pulled from each subdeck.
2 - I suspend a lot of cards. I suspend whole subdecks if a child isn't ready to learn that information yet...but the deck is ready whenever they are. I suspend certain cards in a deck if I want to introduce easier concepts first. I slowly unsuspend cards if I want to slow down new cards being introduced even further than I can in the settings, etc.

Using those methods, Anki is more or less open and go on a day to day basis. About once a year I search for new decks with interesting information and add them to the kids' decks, and about every 3-4 months I go into each deck to see if anything needs to be unsuspended.

That sounds amazing. I admire you. It feels like it would be a steep learning curve for me, but I think it could help DS. Maybe I’ll give another go at trying to learn how to use it.

It is a very steep learning curve, but it also has a very devoted fan base, so there are tons of YouTube videos on tips, tricks and tutorials. Plus, since it is open source software, people have made so many useful (and less useful 😄) add-ons.

Anki is so customizable...but that is a blessing and a curse.
