Catherine
I want my tenth grader to read some of it, for our US History studies. I'd love it if someone who is familiar with it could suggest a few chapters to read for an understanding of what the book is "about". I'm familiar with it, but have not read it myself. Thanks all. Harriet Vane
It's been years since I read it, but I remember it well. I enjoyed this book. Can I ask why you want only an excerpt? It's a good book, and one of the easier classics to read. I would recommend reading the whole thing--the story is engaging and the language is user-friendly. Catherine
his other readings and the work of AP US History. To be honest, I'm considering dropping the AP and just doing the SAT II after reading the thread on it. History is not ds's favorite subject anyway and it was his idea-he's less enthusiastic now that we are slogging through it. I'll see. Maybe I will have him read it. Thanks for the idea. FloridaLisa
Catching up on some old posts! What about using an audio version? One year, a friend whose son lots to read for some heavy courses would often get a couple books on tape to use while going to and from baseball practice, church, etc. Uncle Tom's Cabin bring together the threads of several different lives, many times alternating from chapter to chapter, so it would be difficult to excerpt a piece and still understand and appreciate the whole. Janie
I've suggested this link to many over the years. UTC is a long book for most high school students, but it is such a moving book that makes a difference in a person's life when read in its entirety. A Young Folk's edition is also available for logic stage. Hope this helps!
