bluebonnetgirl
Has anyone taken Spanish at Big River Academy online? Would love feedback!
flor
I can't comment on Big River Academy as I haven't used them. What I can tell you is I am impressed with the booklist their Spanish I and II teacher (Ariana Hall) is using. These titles follow the TPRS method, by far my favorite language acquisition method. For years when my oldest children were little, I tried different (and highly regarded) curriculums to get them to speak Spanish (they already understood it as I had always talked to them in Spanish). When we started using TPRS methods and some of their materials, everything blossomed: their fluency, grammar, reading, and writing skills. Now they are fairly fluent speakers. If Ariana Hall is TPRS trained and teaches it well, I think you have a winner and a gem (I have searched but this is the first online class I see using TPRS books).
bluebonnetgirl
Thank you Flor. I’m considering their Spanish 2 class, and I’m not sure if you can jump in to that method coming from a different method. I’m going to try to find out. Has anyone taken Spanish at Big River with Ariana Hall?
flor
Most welcome. It's been a while since I researched about TPRS. You can start by reading this https://www.tprsbooks.com/what-is-tprs/ and http://fluencyfast.com/about-us/what-is-tprs. Carol Gabb who is one of the prominent TPRS instructors and director of the San Francisco Giants Language Program used to have a very insightful website. Her books in Spanish are excellent. From there as you suggested try to find out more. TPRS was initially recommended to me by a homeschool mom and former high school Spanish teacher. She shared the method and the solid results she observed, I researched a lot (back then, my ailing memory now fails me). I can attest to that from our own experience: my children can communicate with my mom, their beloved abuela 🙂. Maybe you can ask Ariana Hall for a recording of her classes to see if it would be a good fit for your student (??).
bluebonnetgirl
Thank you Flor. I just found out that this teacher is new to Big River Academy, so there are not any videos that one can watch. I have an email into her though to ask some questions about coming on as a Spanish 2 student to her curriculum.
