Macs, TVs, smart boards, o'my!

Help me understand this if you are a Mac geek please!?!

This is what I am thinking... I am moving in about a month and the new house I am renting will have a large flat screen tv in the main/homeschool room.  We have Macs and an old, unreliable iPad.  In the past I had an Apple TV but after it died I switched to a Roku.  Cut the cable a couple of years ago and just use an antenna and the Roku in my room.

Can't i get a new Apple TV and hook it up to the flat screen TV and use my Mac to mirror/AirPlay and turn the TV into a smart board?  What app would I use?  Would my MacBook Pro work or do I really need to use an iPad?  I know I had whiteboard apps on the iPad but I can't seem to find an easy one to use for my MacBook.  Would primarily like to use it for math problems.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  No power, limited internet for the last 24 hours so I am very bored.  Give me some easy things to research.
