PentecostalMom
I have an 11yo headed into 6th grade. She has not done any foreign language with the exception of puttering with Getting Started with Latin. I am trying to decide whether to add a full Latin program to her schedule or do some sort of word roots program. Opinions and advice? Thanks! winterbaby
Does she aspire to actually read Latin literature? If not, all that grammar may be a waste of time. On the other hand, what are your other options for foreign language? If you don't know/can't outsource a modern language, a language like Latin that really can be learned straight from a book may work better than trying to DIY a spoken language you don't actually speak. But it will only work if you work with/ahead of her, really learning it yourself. It's not impossible but it does take some doing.

She finished and reviewed about half of the book. She likes the fact that it helps her understand word roots and it has also helped her with spelling. She wants to learn a modern language, and we both think Latin will help. We do not desire to outsource a language at this time.
winterbaby
How do you think Latin will help with another language? If there's no desire to actually use Latin, why not spend that time on the language you actually do want to learn? I love Latin (have a degree in classics) but it has a lot of grammatical structure not found in Spanish, French, etc., which is wasted effort unless you want to read Latin authors. The study skills are different from a living language, too.
Bluegoat
What winterbaby said. Latin is perfect for reading Latin. If you want a modern language, I'd start with that.
