PollyOR
I posted this on the K-8 board but figured moms of older children could probably answer my question better. I enjoy using Rod & Staff textbooks (Math, Science, English, etc.), but I've come to a point where I am considering Analytical Grammar for my 8th grader. Any advice? We used R&S 3, 4, & 5 but she had a hard time with R&S 6. We took a long break, and now we are trying R&S 6 again. She is definitely ready now, but she dreads the lessons. I try to keep it short by doing the lesson orally which helps. Yet, when I look ahead at doing another 100+ lessons, I groan too. I watched the videos on Analytical Grammar's website last night. Erin is a very good salesperson! It sounds great and I like the fact that we can do it in chunks. But, I already own R&S 6 & 7. I need someone to convince to spend more $. :D I need to add that dd is struggling with depression and is easily overwhelmed. We are working with doctors, but until we get things evened out dd needs short lessons that won't frustrate her. TIA!
mommy25
I have used both. R&S is way too cumbersome and I think I disliked it more than the kids! AG is just enough, and, if she is used to R&S she will probably find AG refreshing. I don't necessarily follow the 10 week on and 10 weeks off schedule - we keep working at it until we get burned out and the we stop for awhile and then pick it up again. Another option is too not do either! If your dd is struggling with depression she may need a break and this is an area that if you skip a year or two it will not make a big difference (IMO :)). Hope this helps!
Ame E.
I am using ninth grade Rod & Staff this year and am disappointed. i don't think the high school series is as in depth as the grade school series. If I could have afforded it, I would have gone with Analytical grammar.
Sandy in Indy
I am a huge fan of R&S English and use the 3-8 books in our family. Usually I would say use R&S but IMHO, in your circumstance, I'd switch. AG's a good program, as well.
