quietchapel
Are there any books that any of you would suggest?
rose
The Story of Canada by George W. Brown, Eleanor Harman & Marsh Jeanneret is pretty good but there are a couple of despicable parts due to 1950's bias (I remember one paragraph about how the RCMP was doing such a good job of taking care of the native people! ) . It's really engaging and has little sub-stories to keep the children's interest. It's a lot like Makers of the Americas. Makers has some South American history but the US patriotism is exhausting if you're not a patriot.
hollyhock
If you have elementary aged kids, I really like My First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie. It's written like a story and we all find it interesting.
Hobbes
There is a series of books called "Dear Canada" that covers various periods of Canadian history using a "firsthand account" style with young girl characters. It's pretty popular with Canadian homeschoolers. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0439974216/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1477333826&sr=8-14&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=dear+Canada
Bluegoat
If you have elementary aged kids, I really like My First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie. It's written like a story and we all find it interesting. Yes, we used and liked this too. It reminds me a little of Our Island Story, in that it is non-fiction in a really narrative form. It's not quite as delightful as OIS but still very good. It isn't in depth on anything - for that other texts will have to be added - but it's the best narrative structure I've found so far for that age group.

deerforest
For elementary, my daughter loved the series of the pioneer family which takes place in the 1800s in Canada. There are several in the series: https://www.amazon.com/Barbara-Greenwood/e/B000AP71OS/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1

deerforest
We are enjoying 'In the Land of the Jaguar' for South America We loved that book, but I didn't think it fit the living book request.
