calihil
I'm looking for a workbook to supplement the Rod and Staff math 2 I have for my second grader. I want something with mostly word problems, concept math, etc to get her thinking more conceptually and stretch her a bit. Thanks!
SarahW
Word problems + conceptual math + workbook makes me think of the My Pals are Here! Math Enrichment series. It doesn't seem to be a popular series in America, but I did a book with my son, and it seemed really good. Not very long either, so it would be about right for a supplement, I think. Clemsondana
Singapore Math has Challenging Word Problems books. Within each book they're divided into groups by topic (decimals, ratios, fractions, etc) so you can also choose the types that fit with what you're already doing. alisha
I've used the Mathematical Reasoning books, but it doesn't sound like what you're looking for because they aren't very challenging. I would recommend Challenge Math (primary level, I think) by Zaccaro. It's kind of like word problems, but real life math type stuff, and it has a general, easy-ish problem that you walk through together, then it's divided into 4 levels, and you just do a couple problems for whatever level you're at. SoCal_Bear
If you are interesting in Singapore word problems but are not planning to use SM as your curricula, I would suggest Fan Math Process Skills in Problem Solving series instead of the Challenging Word Problems series. It has more explicit teaching which would be helpful to you. It still teaches SM style word problems. Zacarro's Primary Challenge Math (two other books Upper Elementary and Challenge Math follow) is a good supplement as well.
