Graphic organizer for outlining

Recommended Posts

This looks good for pre-reading.

The problem with using an outline graphic organizer, which is pre-made, is that it won't necessarily fit your textbook. It would have a certain number of sections and subsections. I think you'd be best to just do a traditional outline. Here is one which has 3 sections and 3 details under each.  http://www.k6edu.com/graphic-organizers/pdf/outline.pdf

Regular graphic organizers work well, too. It's easy to draw a main idea in a circle and do clouds of ideas around it for the details. Venn diagrams are great for comparing/contrasting 2-3 things.

I have always understood you would generally use graphic organizers OR outlines, not both. They are different ways to do the same things (organize the information to summarize what you read or prepare to write). As far as learning to outline, we use Scholastic's Paragraph Writing Made Easy, which covers both outlining paragraphs and writing paragraphs from outlines. I think it provides a good level of hand-holding for that level.

I like Remedia's outlining workbooks to teach outlining.  Then, once they've learned outlining, it's no sweat to apply it to other books.

I don't think she's trying to use both. She'd like a graphic organizer that will lend itself to learning the skill of outlining, which is a higher level skill than using a graphic organizer.

Yeah I have the remedia begining book and did it with my oldest-perhaps I should get that out and look at it again. I think I am hesitant because I would rather have him working in the context and while that book was an absolute fit for my oldest I think this kiddo will see it too much as busy work.

Yes, exactly!
