Geography for a 3rd grader?

I didn't choose a geography curriculm at the beginning of this year because I didn't want Elle to be overwhelmed with work. Things are going very well and we're finishing our lessons in good time, so I'd like to add in geography.

We're using Winter Promise American Story I for our spine, if that makes a difference in any recommendations. I'd like to keep our geography studies in line with our main area of study, but am certainly not against a whole world approach at this point, either.

To keep it simple we are going with this idea. I am still searching for others.

Each day we trace a black line US map that is laminated. We then break

down each week into five states. I found some large flash cards from

Barnes and Noble. We read the information about the particular state

and then color in the particular state on our blackline map. We work on

memorizing 5 states and capitals each week.

The cards are really pretty interesting and if we want to know more

information about the state, we simply go to the state sponsored

tourist website to gather more information.

We also keep track of all the states we've personally visisted via a

large wall map.

*I borrowed many of the above ideas (tracing and memorizing) from the

Classical Conversations program that we will be participating in this

year.*

We also have a game called "10 days in the USA" which really helps with

learning Geography. http://www.otb-games.com/usa/index.html This

company has other continents as well.

I also know of a US States Lapbook at www.homeschoolhelperonline.com

When I was searching, I had Cantering the Country and Kids Learn America mentioned as well.

the Spectrum Geography workbook, I found it at Borders.

I've seen these at the bookstore but never checked them out. Thanks!

Why not simply map the different cities, states, rivers, mtns, etc that you read about in your history studies?

Good idea! I didn't even think of that. I guess I was so focused on having a curriculm that I didn't even consider doing on my own.

Thank you for all of this! I was having trouble locating the free thread, so double thanks. :)
