Have your kids taken these classes??

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decide between these two classes for my 12 year old. Anyone have any experience with these online providers or specifically with these classes? Help me make my decision.

My son is doing a couple of workshops over the summer through OnlineG3 and really enjoying them. He doesn't necessarily have the requirements for the class though. I'm thinking I could probably talk to them and see if it would be ok for him.

Any advice about how they run classes, style, etc. would be helpful.

Thanks!

ETA: What about Intro to Socratic Discussion through WTM Academy? and Intro to Forensics through CTY?

We haven't done any of these but I wanted to point out the socratic discussion class is new this fall so you won't find anyone who's done it.

I don't have any experience with online courses but we do have some familiarity with MCT's language arts program just below the level mentioned here.  We quite like it, though it does teach things a bit differently than the other English language arts classes we have tried.  If your son hasn't used MCT materials before this online class he might have some catching up to do on MCT-specific concepts.  Do talk to the instructor, if that is the case.  They will know better if the structure of the class will work well with someone who hasn't had the specific background.

If, however, your son has done the Town level in MCT LA and Ceasar's English I and you are looking to skip ahead I advise you not to do so.  I have found that the Voyage level and CE II include more detail, further concepts, tougher material in general and are not just a repeat of the same old stuff.  I was considering skipping ahead, too, or at least accelerating our way through the Voyage/CE II level, but now that I've examined it we will be careful to take the whole year.  There's a lot of new stuff in there.

I've stated all of this because you mentioned your son didn't have all of the listed requirements for the MCT course.  I'm merely trying to offer what I know, in case it helps in making your decision.
