Pam in CT
The text BBC's summary here (I haven't found the full report yet) draws an interesting link between school performance and economic growth, that reminded me of the income inequality thread a few weeks ago. My brother lives in Singapore (top ranked) and his two stepsons are in the public system there. There are a whole lot of elements that are done very differently (starting with how schools are funded and how curriculum is designed -- both centrally and top-down and equal across all schools) that would be difficult to effect here. But equally striking is a very widespread cultural expectation that every child can achieve mastery particularly in math -- takes more time and effort for some, but teachers AND parents AND kids themselves expect that with enough time and practice they will get there. No early sorting, no scaling back, no giving up.
