Jessiepage
I am looking at the different ways to teach math facts for first grade. Horizons math suggest drilling sums of 9 then sums of 18. We have been drilling the facts as +1, +2, +3, +4....... You end up with the same facts, just presented a different way correct?? Which way do you prefer? Coco_Clark
Depends on the kid. There are so many approaches and they all work. My current 5yo works well with "fact families" like the three corner cards. So he memorizes/drills in groups like= 2+3=5 3+2=5 5-2=3 5-3=2 As well as playing a lot with "what are all the ways to make/break 5?" 0+5 1+4 2+3 My current 6yo doesn't excel at memorizing, and definitely doesn't respond to drill. We went with more of the "trick" method ala Two Plus Two is Not Five. It teaches the facts according to what trick you use to learn them, so it starts with counting up one, counting down one, doubles, ect.
