How many days per week do you schedule FLL/WWE? We are doing FLL/WWE 2. I was thinking 3 days for FLL and 4 for WWE per week?

Who uses writing with ease and first language lessons? What do you love about writing with ease? We are using rod and staff for english currently. For writing I'm trying to decide if I want to continue to use a more traditional writing book or try WWE, possibly with FLL. My daughter loves to study poems and I love that poems are a part of WWE.

This is for those that use Rod and Staff English. We are in grade 2 and right now I am using rod and staff along with daily 6 trait writing. But I'm wondering if I'm overdoing it with writing since writing is covered in Rod and Staff. At what point do you add writing to rod and staff? Thanks!!

Hi! My 2nd grade dd is very interested in learning about animals, so we are looking to choose a science curriculum that includes animal study. We are looking at apologia zoology 3 and elemental science biology. I love them both! If you have used either or both, can you help me choose?

I don't need help teaching it, I was simply looking for those that have used this curriculum.

I am on an iphone with my 3 year old climbing on me. That is why my grammar is not perfect. Plus I stink at texting fast. I never hand the book to my dd and expect her to do it by herself. I teach her the lesson, and she completes the work. Some days, if the lesson is review, she can do just fine on her own. I feel very judged and this is so disappointing. I will not be posting here again.

Hi! I'm in my second year of homeschooling with a 2nd grader. I need some help deciding on a language arts curriculum and was hoping you could tell me your experiences. I am looking at rod and staff (used in for a few weeks but have to make my dd write it out for her to retain it), FLL (the drawback with this is that my dd is very independent so she likes to do as much as possible independently, however she loves poem memorization, BUT she totally spaces out when I talk for more than two seconds), easy grammer (looks short, sweet, and to the point), or language smarts by critical thinking co. (Used this book for grade 1 and she really really enjoys it BUT I've heard alot of people don't use it unless as a suppliment). I'm using daily 6 trait writing for writing pratice and spelling you see, so those are covered. Would love to hear opinions please!!!!

Do you use the teaching manual with these? I see a manual for writing but not FLL

I'm planning to start FLL with my 2nd grader this fall. I noticed WWE is recommended to use along with FLL but from the samples, it seems like alot. My daughter loves writing. We dis a few writing units last year and she loved them. If you use FLL, what do you use for writing? Or does FLL cover writing already? If so, when do you add writing? Thanks!

Lets talk math! We have been working out of math mammoth and horizons this yr for 1st grade. My daughter loves both! But, I know for next year, I want to settle on one curriculum so she wont have so much to juggle. The things I love about horizons are, it is spiral so my daughter reviews past learned concepts daily and retains more, and she can do it independently after I introduce new concepts (its not overwhelming). The things I like about math mammoth is it teaches her different ways of solving problems which helps her mental math and she catches on well because she is very math minded. It is also more challenging than horizons. I do not like that it doesn't have math facts included in the curriculum. The math facts she drills from horizons have been great and she has memorized about 90% of them. I guess I would love to mix these two together to make the perfect spiral, challenging yet not too challenging curriculum that includes math drills and is fairly independent, meaning it explains concepts well in the student book while teaching mental math strategies. I would love to hear recommendations!!

Hi! I've seen some families cover ancient history in elementary grades and then American history in upper grades, and some families cover American history in elementary and the move to ancient history. Im trying to decide on a history plan for us. I have a 2nd grader. We love SOTW but I feel like she's missing out not covering American history first. What do you do, and why? Thanks!!

Hi! We are currently doing BJU heritage and science this year for 1st grade (and our first year homeschooling). I like BJU, my daughter enjoys it, but its just a bit boring. I want something different for 2nd grade besides reading the text and doing a worksheet. The science activities are ok but not overly exciting. I feel like my daughter is not really retaining as much as she would be if she had more hands on and different ways of learning the lesson. Ive been looking at winters promise American story 1 and Im liking the living books and the activities that are scheduled, the notebooking for science, and the materials for different projects are provided. My daughter especially loves the science unit on birds, insects, and plants. Ive also been looking at MFW adventures. The drawbacks I have with adventures is that I dont want to be running to the library for books, and I have heard that the science is very light so im afraid it will be like we exlerienced this year with BJU science. Any advise on WP and MFW would be greatly appreciated! What did you like/ not like? Do you have to plan ahead for the activities? Which has more hands on type learning? Which requires less gathering of books and supplies? I want activities and stories that will make a lasting memory for my family 😊. Thanks!!

I'm looking for a math curriculum that directs which addition and subtraction facts to focus on each day. I'm currently using horizons math grade 1 but I do not like how it does not say specifically which facts to practice when. It does direct you to drill flash cards (rotating between facts 1-9 and 10-18 for addition and subtraction) but I would rather have less facts to concentrate on at a time. I do however like that horizons gives fact drill worksheets each day. I've looked at Abeka and I like how it tells you specifically which facts flash cards to do each day and has a drill worksheet daily. But I would like the curriculum to teach the "whys" and not just the memorization of math in general. Any suggestions on a curriculum that would teach facts like this?

I am looking at the different ways to teach math facts for first grade. Horizons math suggest drilling sums of 9 then sums of 18. We have been drilling the facts as +1, +2, +3, +4....... You end up with the same facts, just presented a different way correct?? Which way do you prefer?

I am looking way ahead (my ds is currently 2 years old) at preschool programs. He loves to be included in school time with his big sister, so we are working on a letter a week. His attention span and vocabulary has really improved and he is soaking it all up. I am looking for a program that includes letters, pre-reading, colors, numbers, and possibly motor skills (we also have sensory boxes for this). I love how preschool prep and sing, spell, read, and write look online. Can you share with me what you have loved, liked, or tossed?

Ok...we are doing grade 1 this year and Ive been changing things here and there to fit my dd's learning style. I spend a couple minutes teaching the lesson (besides math) and she's good on her own. Sometimes she will start a new lesson without me, and teach herself. She's very independent like that. So keeping that in mind, I'm looking at phonics, spelling, grammer in BJU and horizons. Which do you prefer and why??

We have a solid phonics program. I am just wanting to know what homeschool curriculum incorporates sight words/ high frequency words into their lessons as well, with the phonics.

Does anyone know what curriculum uses/ incorporates sight words with their reading or spelling program?

We are starting horizons phonics, reading, and spelling for grade 1 and I'm hoping someone that is familiar with horizons can give me some insight as far grammer in this curriculum. I'm not seeing much in the scope and sequence as far as parts of speech ect. Is this covered throughout the curriculum? Or covered in a later grade? Thanks!

We have nailed down our first grade math with horizons and math mammoth and we LOVE it! Now I'm looking for a spelling, grammar, and phonics program. We currently use language smarts b, daily 6 trait writing, and phonics pathways but I'm looking for a more structured phonics and a spelling program to go along with that. I've been really looking into BJU or horizons. I've read a lot of comments that BJU is very teacher intensive which I expect all programs to be at first grade to some degree. My concern is that my dd loves to do her work independently after I explain the lesson. And I have a two year old to tend to as well. SO, horizons or bju?? I need opinions of those that have used these for phonics and English, spelling, and reading. Thanks!!

We have been using story of the world volume 1 for the last couple of months with my first grader. Although we love ancient Egypt, I want something that will give her a good all around start on history. I am searching for a curriculum that teaches economics, our national heritage, our community, famous leaders, inventors.....any suggestions? Thank you!
