katilac
dd took high school French, but decided to enroll in the first class at university b/c they indicated there might be a lot of conversation, and she had completely self-studied and had little speaking practice. the level of conversation turned out to be no problem, and she has the scores to withdraw and then get credit when she completes the next level. Would the W be a ding on her transcript in that case? She is dual enrolled, so she would finish the next level in spring of her junior year. If she stays in the class, she will have an A. She plans to take 4 semesters of French via DE, and she already has through Latin IV. Advice? Thoughts?

She might want to inquire with the Registrar of the university whether credit-by-examination (which is what the retroactive credit for the course after completing the next higher level would likely be) replaces the W on her transcript. (I assume it is past the deadline until which any withdrawal does not show up on the transcript?) If it does not, she could request the professor to have her actually test out now, so that she can get course credit by examination for this semester. The prof may be willing to give her a test and a grade and waive future work, if her school policies allow that. The precise details depend on the school; at our school, no letter grade would be issued unless it is an A. This would be another question for the Registrar and instructor. Alternatively, she could see if she can change her placement to take the next higher level NOW, assuming this is offered. But again, the last day to add a course may already be past. She has messages in to numerous people, but I hate waiting :glare: This is her instructor's first semester teaching, and we took her word for a few things we shouldn't have - she thought dd would not have to withdraw, but it looks like she might. dd specifically asked about testing out of the next one instead, etc, b/c you can only take the test once a year, and testing out of the class she is in NOW isn't as helpful if she gets a W. Or has to attend class anyway, lol.
Teachin'Mine
Assuming her only options are a W or an A, I would opt for the A.
ocelotmom
Assuming her only options are a W or an A, I would opt for the A. Agreed. Unless there's a lot of mandatory busywork, it sounds like a low-stress easy A.
katilac
That's my thought as well. I do find it rather amusing that I have to explain the concept and allure of an easy A to my always-homeschooled child
Teachin'Mine
Maybe instead of extolling the easy A you can explain how a W on one of her first DE courses wouldn't look great. You can explain, as the guidance counselor, but it really would be much better to just have an A instead of a W. The A wouldn't require any explanation.
