Congratulations!! Is this the 12, from which the NZ team of 6 is selected?

Yes, it is!

Thanks everyone for your support!  It is hard to believe that it has only been 2 years since we switched focus from music to math.  He gets home today and has asked to go to the Air Show tomorrow.  Should be super fun!

I am not sure how this is going to affect his very dense math plans this year; we may have to re-jig again! :willy_nilly:

Are you kidding woman? (said in the cheekiest way with lots of :001_wub: ). Any re-jigging will be so worth it!

Very, very proud of him!

Ok, here is the schedule.  He has to take the BMO2 (British MO, 4 hours), the AMO (Australian MO, 8 hours over 2 days), and the APMO (Asia Pacific MO, 4 hours).  In addition, every 3 weeks he has a problem set to turn in that looks like it will take 30-40 hours as it has 8 proofs to write.  They will give feedback on all of these exams and problems; and how he performs in the next 3 months will determine if he is on the team or not.

The first big problem, he will have AoPS Olympaid geometry and AoPS PreCalc running concurrently for 3 weeks and at the exact same time of day starting on 26 Jan.  This will overlap with the first problem set which is due on 8 Feb.

He also has to raise $2000 travelling expenses!  Although we can pay, we are going to try to get him to raise the money.  Will start another thread on this issue.

The next problem: we have already settled on dates to visit American and have organised with all our relatives, and the dates *exactly* overlap with the IMO in Thailand.  Sigh.  We don't think he will get in, but perhaps we can get some travel insurance for cancellation of his ticket?!??!  Don't know.

Finally, we have a serious problem with this year's (2015) math plans of doing AoPS PreCalc, Calc1 (self studied), Calc2 at university, and the AoPS WOOT and doing this in addition to the Squad training.  Will start another thread on this too. As far as I am concerned, it is a disaster, and things will have to change.

I am feeling very :confused1:  and :hurray:  and :willy_nilly: .

This was very unexpected.

You should make contingency plans for your trip. Make sure he feels that it's 100% good to get in (and of course it's okay to not get in, since it's hard, and there's still the future).

Ok. I will. I'm still struggling in my own head space. But I hear you. I don't want him to throw the exams because he thinks we don't actually want him to get in.

As for guessing the chances of getting in, there are 12 going for 6 places, but they're not all equal, so they don't all have 50% chance. But however it was scored to get the 12, most people would be clustered near the cutoff (think of a right tail of the bell curve above some cutoff) while a few would be out ahead. So as a simplified example, maybe the top 3 would be sure of getting in, the other 9 would be roughly equal to each other, and would competing for the other 3 spots, so would have about 1/3 chance each. And that's a definite chance.

You are close. 4 kids from the team last year are still eligible this year. So I'm guessing that there are 8 kids trying for 2 spots. so a 1/4 chance.

As for the $2000, firstly I think that says something about the the NZ government's commitment to academic excellence, that they won't cover the cost of the program/ competition for a national team to go to an international competition in a core academic subject. Secondly, as to raising it, don't put him under pressure if that could be detrimental. Maybe there's an easy way to raise it, but if it would be hard or time consuming, it could be counterproductive.

I hear you. Perhaps, we don't focus on it now, and if he gets in this year, we pay. If he doesn't, we push for him to start raising the money for 2016 as he would have a year to do it.

It says a huge amount about the NZ government.  DS told us that they were discussing how the NZ government views it as a 'specialist' event, and not open to everyone.  I am very disappointed.

If there's a real time crunch, the calculus could be postponed.

There is a time crunch. Calc1 has to go. See other thread and help me out!
