TheAttachedMama
Hi Everyone, I have recently discovered Saxon Intermediate 3. I have never liked the scripted lessons in regular Saxon k-3...so I have always ruled it out as a math program. However, the format of intermediate saxon looks very nice to me! (The only thing I don't like is that the workbook doesn't have much room for writing.) Has anyone used this? And how to do you like it? What did you use after this program? And LAST QUESTION....what do you need to buy in order to use this program? Are the tests necessary?
hsmom10
We used it 2 years ago, and then went to Saxon 54 and now are doing Saxon 65. It worked well for us and is set up like the 54 and up. We did use the tests.
TheAttachedMama
Thanks so much! Can anyone take a look at this long term 'road map' with Saxon for me? Do I have this right? When do students typically take the PSAT for national merit status? Will this prepare them for that test? 2nd Grade-Intermediate 3 3rd Grade- Intermediate 4 4th Grade- Intermediate 5 5th Grade- Saxon 7/6 6th Grade- Saxon 8/7* 7th Grade- Algebra ½ -or-Algebra 1 8th Grade- Algebra 1 –or- Algebra 2 9th Grade-Algebra 2 –or- Advanced Math 10 Grade-Advanced Math –or- Calculus 11th Grade-Calculus -or- Elective for Math 12th Grade- Elective for Math *How they do in 8/7 will determine if they take Algebra 1/2 or Algebra 1 next

kiana
Yes to both. For a lot more information about using Saxon, check out http://www.homeschoolwithsaxon.com/newsletterpage-2012.php#0412 -- I've sent it directly to transcript but his newsletter has a lot of information. Spring Flower
We liked the intermediate 3 WAY more than the scripted books. We used the textbook, the workbook pages, and the tests. We did the Power Up orally so we did not use those worksheets. I personally never used the solutions manual but I can see how it could be valuable to some. The worksheets didn't have much room for writing but there was usually only one or two problems (if that) on each worksheet than needed more space. We were able to cram the work somewhere on the page but used an additional sheet of paper if necessary. I love the Saxon approach. I wish I had used it as a child. It is a perfect fit for me. Unfortunately it was too repetitive for my kids so we have switched to Singapore this year and it has been a much better fit. We may come back to Saxon in Algebra. kbernt
...what do you need to buy in order to use this program? You can get the teacher's edition as a pdf file on cdrom relatively inexpensively; it's included in: Saxon Math Intermediate 3: Teacher Technology Package isbn 1600328946. The associated student text is isbn 1600325343.
