need mandarin recommendations

I would very much recommend starting with a native speaker.  It's crucial to get the tones correct at the beginning: they are not optional, like tones of voice in English, rather they make the meaning of the word.  'Ma' can mean a handful of different things (mother, horse, to scold, hemp) depending on the tone.  When you start, you can't hear whether you are saying the tones correctly, because English-speakers brains are not attuned to them.  You need drilling.

See if there is a Chinese student locally who would be willing to take it on.  There are also lesson-by-Skype options.
