Lets discuss retellings of the Great Books.

I have Shapeshifters: Tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses on hold at the library, and am excited about seeing it.

There are Dover coloring books for some of the Great Books.

I'm trying to come up with a list of authors who devoted themselves to writing retellings of the Great Books for children. I know there are more, but I have never compiled a list, and so far my new list includes:

Geraldine McCaughrean

Rosemary Sutcliff

Padraic Colum

Ludmila Zeman

What do YOU think about the value of Great Books retellings compared to 18th and 19th century children's "classics"?

What do you think about retellings of the Great Books in general?

This is a free for all. Nothing is offtopic. I'm just starting conversation; take it where you want to.
