freeindeed
For a 5yo, with very limited communication (as in she can communicate basic needs of hunger, thirst, ready to go to bed, desire to go outside), is visually impaired, developmentally delayed, mentally insufficient, and autistic? We currently use Oak Meadow Preschool and Wynstone's Kindergarten Series. She loves "Circle Time," music and singing, and movement. I am just wondering what tools there are that would help her to really understand the alphabet, numbers, counting, etc. Thanks!
City Mouse
You might try something like Move, Touch, Do from American Printing House for the blind. APH has lots of great stuff. You can download a cataloge from their website.
geodob
You wrote that: 'She loves "Circle Time," music and singing, and movement.' Perhaps you could build a curriculum around music, singing and movement? Where she could learn the alphabet as a song? Once she has learnt the alphabet song, she could then learn how to write down the song, using Letters. But a song is made up of lines, so the alphabet song would be divided up into lines of letters. Which would also introduce 'timing', to structure the song. Where different beats could also be explored? That could be tapped out to the song. Where different beats could be counted out? The beat/ timing could be written as numbers, under each song line of letters. Which 1,2,3,4/1,2,3/.... . After learning how to sing and write down an alphabet song. She could perhaps then explore making up songs, where letters are combined as phonemes? As phoneme songs. Which she also writes down. On the way to making up and writing down songs with words. So that understanding the alphabet, numbers and counting, is developed as a consequence of having learned how to make up a write down a song.
